The chemical industry, as defined by the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) code 325, is a diverse collection of sectors ranging from commodity chemicals (e.g., ammonia, chlor-alkalies, ethaline) to consumer products (paint, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, etc.). The former are the up-stream process industries that encompass some of the most energy-intensive, chemical conversions of feedstock into intermediate chemicals, which are used primarily by other industries. The consumer products uses and produces a wide range of downstream chemicals to make, package, and distribute final consumer goods.
