Financial News for Major Energy Companies, Second Quarter 2010

Nineteen U.S. majors collectively reported $19.8 billion of net income in the second quarter of 2010, which was 137-percent more than the $8.4 billion these companies reported for the second quarter of 2009 (but 21 percent less than their $24.9 billion second-quarter average over the 2005-2009 period, after adjusting for inflation).
The leading operations, in terms of net income, for the U.S. majors during the second quarter of 2010 were foreign oil and natural gas production, U.S. oil and natural gas production, and U.S. refining/marketing, which generated contributions to net income of $9.6 billion, $5.2 billion, and $3.6 billion, respectively. All of the lines of business of the U.S. majors tracked by the News recorded higher earnings in the second quarter of 2010 than during the second quarter of 2009.

This spreadsheet contains field-level data as of December 31, 2009 for all underground natural gas storage facilities in the Lower 48 States. Data include company and field name, field type, location, working gas capacity, total capacity, and maximum daily delivery rates.
Peak Underground Working Natural Gas Storage Capacity

This report provides estimates of aggregate peak working gas capacity and working gas design capacity for the U.S. underground natural gas storage as of April 2010. The estimates for national and regional peak working gas capacity are based on the demonstrated maximum working gas volumes for individual active facilities from May 2005 to April 2010. Peak storage estimates are based on monthly data by field from the Form EIA-191M survey, "Monthly Underground Storage Report," which collects data on storage volumes as of the end of the report month.

In 2009, U.S. primary energy production fell 1 percent to 73 quadrillion Btu. Renewable energy production reached 8 quadrillion Btu in 2009, with wind energy registering the largest year-to-year percentage increase among renewable sources. U.S. primary energy consumption fell to 95 quadrillion Btu in 2009, down from the all-time high of 102 quadrillion Btu in 2007 and 5 percent below the 2008 level. From 2008 to 2009, U.S. energy net imports fell 12 percent to 23 quadrillion Btu. Carbon dioxide emissions from energy consumption fell 7 percent from 2008 to 2009, due primarily to a decrease in consumption of coal and petroleum. The Annual Energy Review 2009 provides EIA's most comprehensive look at integrated energy statistics. It covers all major energy sources and all energy-consuming sectors of the U.S. economy from 1949 through 2009.

The August issue of the Monthly Flash Estimate (MFE) of Electric Power Data is available on EIA's Electricity page. This issue provides early highlights of June 2010 electricity data. In June 2010, total electric power generation in the United States increased 7.9 percent compared to June 2009. The average U.S. retail price of electricity remained relatively unchanged in June 2010 compared to the previous year.

Data are for May 2010, during which net generation in the United States rose by 5.2 percent. Consumption of coal for power generation also rose 7.9 percent compared to May 2009. The average retail price of electricity for May 2010 was 9.80 cents per kilowatthour (kWh), 2.2 percent higher than April 2010, and 0.3 percent lower than May 2009 when the average retail price of electricity was 9.83 cents per kWh.
