Natural Gas Monthly

The October Natural Gas Monthly, featuring data for August 2012, has been released. Spurred by continued high demand for electric generation, August natural gas consumption was the highest for August on record at 1,982 billion cubic feet, 4.5 percent higher than the previous high reached in 2007. Dry production for August declined slightly, decreasing from a revised July daily production of 65.6 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/day) to 65.3 Bcf/day in August.

Alaska data are from the State of Alaska and included to obtain a U.S. Total.

In this edition of the Petroleum Marketing Monthly, crude oil and finished petroleum products sales data show a considerable increase in prices during August 2012. Prime Supplier sales data show consumption of gasoline and diesel fuel rose in August after experiencing a decline in July.

The fifth in a series of reports required by section 1245 (d) (4) (A) of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012, which requires that, not later than 60 days from enactment and every 60 days thereafter, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) “submit to Congress a report on the availability and price of petroleum and petroleum products produced in countries other than Iran in the 60-day period preceding the submission of the report.”

EIA projects average household expenditures for heating oil and natural gas will increase by 19 percent and 15 percent, respectively, this winter (October 1 through March 31) compared with last winter. Projected household expenditures are 5 percent higher for electricity and 13 percent higher for propane this winter.

Short-Term Energy Outlook - Market Prices and Uncertainty Report

Crude oil prices rose during the first half of August and were relatively constant during the second half of the month, remaining at the higher levels. The Brent and WTI crude oil benchmarks settled at $113.49 and $95.53 per barrel, respectively, on September 6, with Brent increasing by $7.53 per barrel and WTI increasing by $6.62 per barrel since August 1. Both Brent and WTI have been in narrow trading ranges over the last few weeks, with settlement prices for Brent and WTI staying within $3 dollar per barrel ranges since August 17.

Natural Gas Exports from Iran

This assessment of the natural gas sector in Iran, with a focus on Iran’s natural gas exports, was prepared pursuant to section 505 (a) of the Iran Threat Reduction and Syria Human Rights Act of 2012 (Public Law No: 112-158). As requested, it includes: (1) an assessment of exports of natural gas from Iran; (2) an identification of the countries that purchase the most natural gas from Iran; (3) an assessment of alternative supplies of natural gas available to those countries; (4) an assessment of the impact a reduction in exports of natural gas from Iran would have on global natural gas supplies and the price of natural gas, especially in countries identified under number (2); and (5) such other information as the Administrator considers appropriate.
