In this issue of the Petroleum Marketing Monthly, preliminary April 2013 data show prices for crude oil and refined petroleum products were firmly on the decline. Prime Supplier data show another modest increase in gasoline consumption in the United States, while consumption of ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel experienced a more substantial month-on-month gain.

Natural Gas Monthly

The June Natural Gas Monthly, with data through April 2013, has been released.
• Dry gas production for April was 1,985 billion cubic feet (Bcf) or 66.2 Bcf/day, which is the highest on record for the month. It showed a small increase from last April’s 1,963 Bcf, or 65.4 Bcf/day.
• Total consumption of natural gas for April 2013 was 1,946 Bcf, the second highest consumption on record for the month, a slight decrease from last April’s record-setting 1,956 Bcf.

Alaska data are from the State of Alaska and included to obtain a U.S. Total.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration released new data today showing national and regional monthly biodiesel production for April 2013. In addition to biodiesel production, data included producer sales, producer stocks, and feedstock inputs.

The ninth in a series of reports required by section 1245 (d) (4) (A) of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012, which requires that, not later than 60 days from enactment and every 60 days thereafter, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) “submit to Congress a report on the availability and price of petroleum and petroleum products produced in countries other than Iran in the 60-day period preceding the submission of the report.”

Respondents are operators of all operating and idle petroleum refineries (including new refineries under construction) and refineries shut down during the previous year, located in the 50 States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Guam, and other U.S. possessions.

EIA expects the price of regular gasoline will average $3.53 per gallon over the summer driving season (April through September). The annual average regular gasoline retail price is projected to decline from $3.63 per gallon in 2012 to $3.49 per gallon in 2013 and to $3.37 per gallon in 2014.

After declining in March and April, Brent and WTI prices traded in a relatively narrow range for most of May. Brent settled at $103.61 per barrel on June 6, an increase of $3.66 per barrel since May 1, and WTI settled at $94.76 per barrel on June 6, an increase of $3.73 per barrel since May 1.
