Algeria Country Analysis Brief

Mar 2, 2023
Algeria is a major crude oil and natural gas producer in Africa and has been a member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) since 1969, about 10 years after Algeria first began producing crude oil. Algeria imports very little energy as its domestic consumption is met by its own oil and natural gas production, which is heavily subsidized. Natural gas and oil account for almost all of Algeria's total primary energy consumption.

Petroleum Marketing Monthly

Mar 1, 2023

The March 2023 Petroleum Marketing Monthly (PMM), with data through December 2022, presents monthly and annual price and volume statistics covering crude oil and refined petroleum products sales in the United States. In addition, files containing updated federal and state motor fuel and aviation fuel tax information are available on the PMM webpage.

December 2022 crude oil sales data are available in Tables 1, 1A, and 18—27. However, publication of refined petroleum products sales data continue to be delayed.

Natural Gas Monthly

Feb 28, 2023

In December 2022, dry natural gas production increased year over year for the month for the 21st consecutive month. The preliminary level for dry natural gas production in December 2022 was 3,068 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 99.0 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d). This level was 1.0% (1.0 Bcf/d) higher than December 2021 (98.0 Bcf/d) and the highest level for the month since 1973, when we began tracking dry natural gas production. Gross withdrawals also increased from December 2021.

This edition of the Natural Gas Monthly includes annual totals for 2022 for the first time:

  • Dry natural gas production increased 3.7% for the year, from 94.6 Bcf/d in 2021 to 98.1 Bcf/d in 2022. Total dry natural gas production was the highest on record for any year since EIA began tracking it in 1930.
  • Estimated natural gas consumption increased 5.4%, from 84.0 Bcf/d in 2021 to 88.5 Bcf/d in 2022. Total natural gas consumption was the highest on record for any year since EIA began tracking it in 1949.
  • Total imports of natural gas increased 7.7%, from 7.7 Bcf/d in 2021 to 8.3 Bcf/d in 2022. Annual total natural gas imports were the highest since 2017.
  • Total exports of natural gas increased 3.6%, from 18.2 Bcf/d in 2021 to 18.9 Bcf/d in 2022. LNG exports increased 8.6%, from 9.8 Bcf/d in 2021 to 10.6 Bcf/d in 2022. These annual export totals were the highest on record for any year since EIA began tracking natural gas exports in 1973.

Coal Transportation Rates to the Electric Power Sector

Feb 13, 2023
This recent update to the Coal Transportation Rates to the Electric Power Sector web page incorporates final Form EIA-923 data for 2021 and updates the tables with data in nominal and real 2022 dollars. In 2008, EIA began collecting the commodity cost of all coal delivered to power plants with a combined nameplate capacity of 50 megawatts or greater on Form EIA-923, Power Plant Operations Report. Because we already collect delivered cost for the same shipments, we calculate a proxy for transportation cost by subtracting the commodity cost from the delivered cost. On Form EIA-923, the owners or operators of all applicable plants must provide the quantity (in tons), commodity cost, and total delivered cost (both in cents per million British thermal units) of all coal shipments by fuel supplier and by month.

Short-Term Energy Outlook

Feb 7, 2023
Natural gas prices. We forecast that the Henry Hub natural gas spot price will average $3.40 per million British thermal units (MMBtu) in 2023, down almost 50% from last year and about 30% from our January Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO) forecast. We revised our outlook for Henry Hub prices as a result of significantly warmer-than-normal weather in January that led to less-than-normal consumption of natural gas for space heating and pushed inventories above the five-year average.
