This report responds to a request by Senator James Inhofe for analysis of a 25-by-25" proposal that combines a requirement that a 25-percent share of electricity sales be produced from renewable sources by 2025 with a requirement that a 25-percent share of liquid transportation fuel sales also be derived from renewable sources by 2025. The electricity requirement is implemented as a renewable portfolio standard (RFS), while the motor fuel standard is implemented as a renewable fuel standard (RFS). The report provides a summary of the impacts of the Policy on U.S. energy markets and the economy through 2030.

EIA's primary report of recent energy statistics: total energy production, consumption, and trade; energy prices; overviews of petroleum, natural gas, coal, electricity, nuclear energy, renewable energy, and international petroleum; and data unit conversions. From January through May of 2007, the industrial sector accounted for 31 percent of all energy consumed in the United States, followed by the
transportation sector at 28 percent; the residential sector at 23 percent; and the commercial sector at 18 percent.

MFE provides an early look at the highlights of the upcoming Electric Power Monthly publication and presents tables of electricity generation, fuel consumption for generation, fossil fuel stocks, and average retail sales and prices of electricity. MFE precedes the next issue of EPM by three weeks. The current issue covers an early review of the June, 2007 electricity data. Renewable Energy Consumption and Electricity Preliminary 2006 Statistics

Preliminary report showing renewable energy provided 7 percent of total U.S. energy consumption in 2006. Total renewable energy market consumption was comprised of biomass, hydroelectricity, geothermal, wind and solar.
