All data for 2006 are preliminary. A data element was added for waste coal supplied in Table 1, resulting in a recalculation of the Losses and Unaccounted For column/data. The Cost and Quality of Fuels for Electric Plants 2004 and 2005 is now available on EIA's Electricity page . This publication provides information concerning the quality, quantity, and cost of fossil fuels used by electric power generating plants in the United States. These plants are comprised of regulated utility power plants and independent power producers, including combined heat and power producers in the commercial and industrial sectors. Copies of the tables included in the Cost and Quality of Fuels for Electric Plants 2004 and 2005 are available in Excel format and have also been posted on the EIA website. EIA's primary report of recent energy statistics: total energy production, consumption, and trade; energy prices; overviews of petroleum, natural gas, coal, electricity, nuclear energy, renewable energy, and international petroleum; and data unit conversions. In preliminary U.S. statistics, net imports of energy accounted for 30.1 percent of total energy consumed in the first three quarters of the year, compared with 29.5 percent in the first three quarters of 2005 and 28.9 percent in the first three quarters of 2004. Monthly Flash Estimate (MFE)

The December, 2006 issue of the Monthly Flash Estimate (MFE) of Electric Power Data is now available on EIA's Electricity Publications page. MFE provides an early look at the highlights of the upcoming Electric Power Monthly publication and presents tables of electricity generation, fuel consumption for generation, fossil fuel stocks, and average retail sales and prices of electricity. MFE precedes the next issue of EPM by three weeks. The current issue covers an early review of the October, 2006 electricity data. IEA Quarterly Coal Questionnaire (QCQ) - 3rd Quarter 2006

EIA Policy for Publicly Releasing Planned Electric Generating Unit Information for Years 1998-2000

The EIA has modified its policy and will publicly release EIA survey information collected regarding planned electric generating units for the years 1998, 1999, and 2000. This policy becomes effective on January 12, 2007.

State Energy Profiles

State Energy Profiles is a new gateway to EIA's State energy data, plus individual State Profiles that present key facts and statistics about State energy markets and industries. Many of the statistics in the Profiles will be updated simultaneously with data updates on the EIA web site. Profiles include energy maps that display State energy infrastructure and renewable energy potential.

Field Level Data from Form EIA-191A

This table provides details of data collected from Form EIA-191A, "Annual Underground Gas Storage Report." Storage field capacity, field type, and maximum deliverability as of December 31, 2005 are reported annually by operators of all U.S. underground natural gas storage fields. A State summary is available in Table 14 of the Natural Gas Annual. Data collected prior to the reference year 2005 were protected under EIA confidentiality provisions and are, therefore, not available.

Two electricity markets in the Midwest still generate more electricity from coal than from natural gas in at least some months of the year: Southwest Power Pool (SPP) and the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO). We expect these two regions will generate more electricity from coal than from natural gas in some upcoming winter months, based on forecasts in our latest Short-Term Energy Outlook. More
