Energy Market Impacts of a Clean Energy Portfolio - Follow-up

This analysis responds to a request from Senator Coleman that the Energy Information Administration (EIA) analyze a proposed clean energy portfolio standard (CEPS). The proposal, a copy of which is provided in Appendix B, requires electricity suppliers to increase the share of electricity sales that is generated from clean energy resources, including nonhydropower renewable resources, new hydroelectric or nuclear resources, fuel cells, and fossil-fired plants that capture and sequester carbon dioxide emissions.

Financial Reporting System Public Data, 1977-2005

Today the Energy Information Administration released the latest financial and operating data that it collects from the major U.S. energy companies on its Financial Reporting System (FRS)Form EIA-28. The survey data system reviews the functional performance of the major U.S. energy-producing companies in total, and by the following lines of business: petroleum, coal, non-conventional energy, non-energy, and beginning in 2003, downstream natural gas and electric power. The data are in excel spreadsheet files, and are located on EIA's ftp server for easy downloading. The files have been updated to include the latest year of data, 2005, so that now the series covers the years 1977-2005.

Monthly Flash Estimate (MFE)

The January, 2007 issue of the Monthly Flash Estimate (MFE) of Electric Power Data is now available on EIAs Electricity Publications page. MFE provides an early look at the highlights of the upcoming Electric Power Monthly publication and presents tables of electricity generation, fuel consumption for generation, fossil fuel stocks, and average retail sales and prices of electricity. MFE precedes the next issue of EPM by three weeks. The current issue covers an early review of the November, 2006 electricity data. Electric Power Monthly

The latest EPM issue (January 2007) is now available on EIA's Electricity page http://www.eia.doe.gov/fuelelectric.html. Data being published in the January 2007 EPM include October 2006 data. Historical copies of the EPM tables in Excel format have also been posted on the EIA website, dating back to the May 2003 publication of the EPM. These files can be accessed at the following address:

Energy Market and Economic Impacts of a Proposal to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Intensity with a Cap and Trade System

This report was prepared by the Energy Information Administration (EIA), in response to a September 27, 2006, request from Senators Bingaman, Landrieu, Murkowski, Specter, Salazar, and Lugar. The Senators requested that EIA assess the impacts of a proposal that would regulate emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) through an allowance cap-and-trade system. The program would set the cap to achieve a reduction in emissions relative to economic output, or greenhouse gas intensity.

IEA Coal Annual Questionnaire (ACQ) - 2004R/2005

Provides revised and domestic coal statistics in the following categories: supply and transformation sector; energy sector and final consumption; energy end use specification; imports by source; exports by destination; and calorific values. In 2004, EIA initiated a survey to collect patent fuel (or coal synfuel) distribution; this data is included for 2004 and 2005. Also, included is information on waste coal supplies. This questionnaire is submitted annually to the International Energy Agency (IEA) in Paris, France. All data are final.

Two U.S. markets occasionally produce more electricity from coal than from natural gas  ›

Two electricity markets in the Midwest still generate more electricity from coal than from natural gas in at least some months of the year: Southwest Power Pool (SPP) and the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO). We expect these two regions will generate more electricity from coal than from natural gas in some upcoming winter months, based on forecasts in our latest Short-Term Energy Outlook. More
