U.S. coal production during second quarter 2013 decreased 0.8% from first quarter 2013, but increased 0.8% year-over-year to 243.1 million short tons. During the first half of 2013, year-to-date production levels declined in both the Appalachian and Western Regions by 9.6% and 2.6%, respectively. While coal imports decreased 3.8% during the first six months of 2013, second quarter imports nearly doubled (92.8%) from first quarter 2013, and grew 18.4% from the same quarter in 2012 to 2.8 million short tons. Second quarter coal exports (29.4 million short tons) surpassed the five-year (2008-2012) second quarter average, but decreased 21.6% from second quarter 2012.

The September Natural Gas Monthly, with data through July 2013, has been released.
• Monthly dry gas production for July 2013 was 2,077 billion cubic feet (Bcf) or 67.0 Bcf/day, a slight increase from the revised dry gas production for June 2013 of 2,000 or 66.7 Bcf/day.
• Lower year on year demand for gas for electric generation brought total consumption of natural gas for July 2013 to 1,910 Bcf or 61.6 Bcf/day, an 8 percent decrease from the 2,073 Bcf or 66.9 Bcf/day in July of 2012.

Monthly average crude oil prices increased for the fourth consecutive month in August 2013, as supply disruptions in Libya increased and concerns over the conflict in Syria intensified. The U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) forecast for Brent crude oil spot price, which averaged $108 per barrel during the first half of 2013, averages $109 per barrel over the second half of 2013 and $102 per barrel in 2014, $5 per barrel and $2 per barrel higher than forecast in last month's STEO, respectively.

The front month futures price for Brent, the world waterborne crude benchmark, increased by $5.72 per barrel to settle at $115.26 per barrel on September 5. Front month futures prices for West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil also increased over the same time period but by a lesser amount, to settle at $108.37 per barrel on September 5.
