Natural gas use for power generation is a key part of the natural gas supply and demand balance, even in winter

Jan 29, 2020
Estimated daily natural gas use for power generation has averaged about 28.4 billion cubic per day (Bcf/d) so far this winter (November 1, 2019–January 29, 2020) and is up about 3 Bcf/d, or 12%, compared with the same period in 2018–19. Power burn, estimated based on S&P Global Platts data, reached 34 Bcf/d on January 20, 2020, the second-highest natural gas use for power during a day in the winter.

ISO-New England’s annual Forward Capacity Market auction set to take place on February 3, 2020

Jan 29, 2020
On Monday, February 3, 2020, the Independent System Operator for New England (ISO-NE) will open its annual Forward Capacity Market (FCM) auction. ISO-NE uses the FCM auctions to ensure that the New England power system will have sufficient resources to meet future demand for electricity. Owners of various resources compete in the annual auctions to obtain a Capacity Supply Obligation (CSO) in exchange for receiving a market-priced capacity payment. The payments provide incentives for investing in new resources and also provide a stable revenue stream for existing power resources that help meet peak load on the system.

Monthly Energy Review

Jan 27, 2020
Data in the January 2020 Electric Power Monthly (EPM) are for November 2019, during which net generation in the United States fell 1.7% from the November 2018 level. Consumption of natural gas for power generation was up 7.5% compared with November 2018. The average residential retail price of electricity for November 2019 was up 1.1% from what it had been in November 2018.

Working gas stocks are at their highest mid-winter level since 2017

Jan 24, 2020
Halfway through the 2019–20 winter heat season, underground working natural gas stocks for the Lower 48 states totaled 2,947 billion cubic feet (Bcf) as of Friday, January 17, 2020. Cumulative net withdrawals from working gas totaled 782 Bcf as of January 17, which is the lowest cumulative total at this point in a heating season since 2011 and 29% less than the previous five-year average. Lower 48 states’ working gas stocks are now 251 Bcf, or 9%, higher than the five-year average, which is the largest surplus to a five-year average since May 2017.

The effect of oil prices on natural gas production

Jan 15, 2020
Depending on the nature of oil and natural gas resources specific to particular regions, changes in future oil prices can produce very different results. Relatively higher oil prices push investment toward oil projects and away from natural gas projects, and relatively lower oil prices typically produce the opposite effect. In regions where oil and natural gas resources do not tend to be comingled, such as Australia, higher oil prices increase oil production without much effect on natural gas production. However, in regions with comingled oil and natural gas resources, such as Brazil, the competition is more complex with less straightforward results. We model production under three oil price cases in Australia and Brazil to illustrate how the combination of resource configurations and price incentives result in different production projections.
