Monthly Energy Review

Jul 28, 2020
The Monthly Energy Review is EIA's comprehensive report on recent and historical energy statistics. Preliminary data indicate that U.S. total primary energy consumption fell from 7.6 quadrillion British thermal units (quads) in April 2019 to 6.5 quads in April 2020, a 14% decrease. The electric power sector accounted for 37% of total consumption, the industrial sector for 25%, the transportation sector for 24%, the residential sector for 8%, and the commercial sector for 5%.

Jul 24, 2020
Data in the July 2020 Electric Power Monthly (EPM) are for May 2020, during which net generation in the United States fell 7.6 percent from the May 2019 level. Consumption of natural gas for power generation was down 0.4 percent compared to May 2019. The average residential retail price of electricity for May 2020 was down 1.5 percent from what it had been in May 2019.

Aliso Canyon natural gas storage use suspended until early August

Jul 21, 2020
The Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas)—the owner and operator of the Aliso Canyon natural gas storage field (Aliso Canyon)—announced on July 20, 2020, that it will restrict injections and withdrawals of natural gas from July 22 to August 6, 2020, as part of a high-inventory shut-in maintenance event. As part of its overall system, SoCalGas operates three other storage fields (Honor Rancho, La Goleta, and Playa del Rey), but these fields will be unaffected by this announcement. Earlier this year (April 15–April 29, 2020) SoCalGas scheduled another temporary Aliso Canyon closure, which disallowed injections and withdrawals as part of a low-inventory maintenance event.

Battery Storage in the United States: An Update on Market Trends

Jul 15, 2020
Large-scale battery storage systems are increasingly being used across the power grid in the United States. At the end of 2018, 869 megawatts (MW) of power capacity, representing 1,236 megawatthours (MWh) of energy capacity, of large-scale battery storage was in operation in the United States. The Battery Storage in the United States: An Update on Market Trends report explores trends in battery storage capacity additions in the United States and describes the state of the market as of 2018, including information on applications, cost, ongoing trends, and market and policy drivers.

Pacific region working natural gas stocks rebound

Jul 14, 2020
Working natural gas stocks in the Pacific region of the United States were 310 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 20 Bcf, above the current five-year average as of July 3, 2020. Pacific region stocks have lagged their rolling five-year average for years because of the effective loss of working natural gas capacity at Aliso Canyon, sustained decreases in natural gas deliveries as a result of maintenance and repairs, and extreme weather. However, so far in 2020, natural gas supplies in the Pacific region, which include local production and net natural gas inflows by pipelines, have outpaced demand in the Pacific region, especially in California, and have contributed to increased net injections of natural gas that have resulted in larger inventories (see charts below).

Drilling Productivity Report

Jul 13, 2020
The Drilling Productivity Report (DPR) uses recent data on the total number of drilling rigs in operation along with estimates of drilling productivity and estimated changes in production from existing oil and natural gas wells to provide estimated changes in oil and natural gas production for seven key regions.

Short-Term Energy Outlook

Jul 7, 2020
The July Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO) remains subject to heightened levels of uncertainty because mitigation and reopening efforts related to the 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) continue to evolve. Reduced economic activity related to the COVID-19 pandemic has caused changes in energy supply and demand patterns in 2020. Uncertainties persist across the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) outlook for all energy sources, including liquid fuels, natural gas, electricity, coal, and renewables. The STEO is based on U.S. macroeconomic forecasts by IHS Markit, which assumes U.S. gross domestic product declined by 6.4% in the first half of 2020 from the same period a year ago before rising from the third quarter of 2020 through 2021.

Increasing fuel efficiency leads to decreasing gasoline consumption ›

Annual motor gasoline consumption in the United States decreased in 2025 even as vehicle miles traveled (VMT) increased because of increasing fuel efficiency, a trend we forecast will continue in 2026 and 2027. U.S. motor gasoline consumption averaged 8.9 million barrels per day (b/d) in 2025, 1% less than 2024 and 4% less than pre-pandemic demand in 2019. In our April Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO), we estimate that motor gasoline consumption will continue to decline as forecast fuel efficiency increases and VMT growth slows. More
