Electric Capacity Expansion Modelling Workshop: Treatment of Variable Renewable Energy
The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) held a workshop on electric capacity expansion modelling on July 11, 2016. The workshop explored the implications of modelling electricity projections at high penetrations of variable renewable energy. EIA operates the Electricity Market Module (EMM) within the National Energy Modelling System (NEMS), a least-cost optimization model that makes decisions on future electricity planning needs based on a variety of assumptions such as future costs and policies. EIA used this workshop as an opportunity to engage stakeholders and modelling experts on important considerations and techniques for enhancing the representation of variable energy within capacity expansion models.
