North American Gas Storage Conference

This presentation before the North American Gas Storage Conference in Houston, Texas, on Feb. 6, 2002 included background information on natural gas storage and selected projections from the January Short-Term Energy Outlook and the Annual Energy Outlook 2002. The projected growth in gas-fired electric power generation is expected to be a key area of concern for storage operations in years to come. The presentation concluded with a status report on the EIA project to initiate the collection and dissemination of weekly underground natural gas storage data.

EIA Requests Comments on Form EIA-882T, "Generic Clearance for Questionnaire Testing, Evaluation, and Research"

EIA issued a Federal Register notice requesting public comments on information collections that will be conducted as part of Form EIA-882T, "Generic Clearance for Questionnaire Testing, Evaluation, and Research." The information collections will include survey pretests, pilot surveys, focus groups and cognitive interviews. Comments should be submitted by April 10, 2002.

Updated Monthly Time Series Data, by State

The monthly time series have been updated to also include annual values. On the US Map click on the desired State and then the data link under Petroleum or Natural Gas; Or, from the right column of the EIA States page you can go directly to the EIA Monthly Time Series Data for each State. Five time series are accessible: (1) Petroleum Product Prices, (2) Petroleum Product Sales, (3) Petroleum Product Stocks, (4) Natural Gas Prices, (5) Natural Gas Production and Sales. The data are extracted from the Oil and Gas Information Retrieval System (OGIRS).

Pacific Renewable Energy Map

EIA's newest Renewable Energy Map provides an integrated picture of renewable energy resources in Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington. Solar, geothermal, and wind energy potentials, indicators of hydroelectric, biomass, and wood energy potential, and the geographic location of renewable energy power plants with a net summer capacity of 1 megawatt or more are shown. The Pacific map completes EIA's series of U.S. Renewable Energy Maps.

Monthly Energy Review

Electric Utility Demand-side Management 2000

Summary tables and the associated data file for electric utility-administered demand-side management (DSM) programs are now available on the EIA's Electricity page. For the year 2000, data indicate an increase in utility spending on energy efficiency and load management programs, as well as increases in energy savings resulting from DSM programs. Information on utility-administered DSM programs is collected on Schedule V of the Form EIA-861 "Annual Electric Utility Report."

U.S. coal-fired generating capacity retired in 2025 was the least in 15 years ›

During 2025, the U.S. electric power sector retired 2.6 gigawatts (GW) of coal-fired generating capacity at four power plants, the least since 2010. At the beginning of 2025, coal plant operators had planned to retire 8.5 GW of capacity; however, 4.8 GW of planned retirements were delayed to a future year, and the operators of two coal plants (1.1 GW) cancelled plans to retire. In addition, the operators of 1.2 GW of capacity planned for retirement in 2027 cancelled their closure plans, and a facility slated to retire in 2026 has delayed its closure until 2029. More
