An Assessment of Prices of Natural Gas Futures Contracts as A Predictor of Realized Spot Prices at the Henry Hub

This article compares realized Henry Hub spot market prices for natural gas during the three most recent winters with futures prices as they evolve from April through the following February, when trading for the March contract ends. Comparing monthly futures and spot market prices provides a basis to assess the performance of futures prices as a predictor of spot prices. An examination of price data for recent years shows that futures prices are relatively poor predictors of the Henry Hub spot price that is realized during the corresponding delivery or target month, and even the final futures price for a given contract often does not anticipate correctly the realized average spot price.
Monthly Energy Review

EIA's primary report of recent energy statistics: total energy production, consumption, and trade; energy prices; overviews of petroleum, natural gas, coal, electricity, nuclear energy, renewable energy, and international petroleum; and data unit conversions. Over the first three-quarters of 2005, 7.1 million barrels per day of crude oil and natural gas plant liquids were produced in the United States (down 2.3% compared with January-September 2004); 20.6 million barrels per day of petroleum were consumed (down 0.1% compared with January-September 2004); and net imports of petroleum measured 12.1 million barrels per day (up 0.7% compared with January-September 2004). Also included in this month's report is an Energy Plug on the "Short-Term Energy and Winter Fuels Outlook." See "What's New in the Monthly Energy Review" for a record of changes.
World Proved Reserves of Oil and Natural Gas, Most Recent Estimates

An updated table of World Proved Reserves of Oil and Natural Gas, Most Recent Estimates is now available. The table has been updated to include the proved oil and natural gas reserve estimates for Year-End 2004 from World Oil. Also, estimates for the United States have been updated with data for December 31, 2004 from EIA's Advance Summary: U.S. Crude Oil, Natural Gas, and Natural Gas Liquids Reserves 2004: Annual Report. The table is also available in Excel spreadsheet format.
State Nuclear Profiles

The nuclear industry profiles for Alabama, Arizona, Louisiana, and Mississippi are now available. Alabama will be the site of the next commercial reactor to come on line (the re-built Browns Ferry unit 1, scheduled for May 2007). Arizona is the site of the Nation's largest nuclear power plant. The nuclear power plants of Louisiana and Mississippi will be contributing to the economic recovery following hurricane Katrina.
Monthly Flash Estimates of Electric Power Data

The latest, October 2005, issue of the MFE of Electric Power Data is now available on EIA¿s Electricity Publications page. MFE provides an early look at the highlights of the upcoming Electric Power Monthly publication and presents tables of electricity generation, fuel consumption for generation, fossil fuel stocks, and average retail sales and prices of electricity. MFE precedes the next issue of EPM by three weeks. The current issue covers an early review of the August electricity data. The data file contains information regarding steam-electric plant operations and equipment design, including boilers, generators, cooling systems, flue gas particulate collectors, flue gas desulfurization units, stacks and flues.

Nuclear Generation by Plant

Nuclear generation in July 2005 was 1.8 percent less than in July 2004. Cumulative generation for the first seven months of 2005 is 2.9 percent less than the comparable period of 2004.
