OPEC Revenues Fact Sheet

Based on projections from the EIA May 2009 Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO), members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) could earn $462 billion of net oil export revenues in 2009 and $526 billion in 2010. Last year, OPEC earned $968 billion in net oil export revenues, a 42 percent increase from 2007. Saudi Arabia earned the largest share of these earnings, $285 billion, representing 29 percent of total OPEC revenues. On a per-capita basis, OPEC net oil export earning reached $2,680 in 2008, a 40 percent increase from 2007.

First Energy Consumption Estimates from MECS 2006

"Some preliminary flash estimates for the 2006 MECS fuel tables are now available. These estimates are a measure of the energy that is used for heat, power, and electricity generation, regardless of where the energy was produced. These estimates are produced at the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) 3-digit level for the U.S.
The data shown may be revised as needed, though we are confident that these estimates are fairly accurate. We will be updating the website periodically in the near future with more data tables as the data become available for release."

In the first quarter of 2009, the average number of rotary rigs drilling in the United States---primarily for crude oil and natural gas---stood at 1,344, 24 percent less than the average in the first quarter of 2008 and 22 percent less than the average in the first quarter of 2007. This report responds to requests from Chairman Edward Markey, for an analysis of a 25- percent Federal renewable electricity standard (RES). The RES proposal analyzed in this report is included in the discussion draft of broader legislation, the American Clean Energy and Security Act (ACESA) of 2009, issued on the Energy and Commerce Committee website at the end of March 2009. The analysis presented in this report starts from an updated version of the Annual Energy Outlook 2009 reference case that reflects the projected impacts of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), enacted in February 2009, and revised economic assumptions.

The major energy sources in the United States are petroleum (oil), natural gas, coal, nuclear, and renewable energy. The major users are residential and commercial buildings, industry, transportation, and electric power generation. The pattern of fuel use varies widely by sector. For example, oil provides 96% of the energy used for transportation, but only 2% of the energy used to generate electric power. Understanding the relationships between the different energy sources and their uses provides insights into many important energy issues.
