OPEC Revenues Fact Sheet

Based on projections from the EIA December 2009 Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO), members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) could earn $575 billion of net oil export revenues in 2009 and $759 billion in 2010. Last year, OPEC earned $965 billion in net oil export revenues, a 41 percent increase from 2007. Saudi Arabia earned the largest share of these earnings, $284 billion, representing 29 percent of total OPEC revenues. On a per-capita basis, OPEC net oil export earning reached $2,671 in 2008, a 38 percent increase from 2007.

Monthly Energy Review

EIA's primary report of recent energy statistics: total energy production, consumption, and trade; energy prices; overviews of petroleum, natural gas, coal, electricity, nuclear energy, renewable energy, and international petroleum; carbon dioxide emissions; and data unit conversions. MER data show that in the first 8 months of 2009, U.S. net imports of energy fell to 16 quadrillion Btu, down 10 percent from the first 8 months of last year. By comparison, U.S. primary energy consumption totaled 64 quadrillion Btu in the first 8 months of 2009. See What's New in the Monthly Energy Review for a record of changes in this report.

The November issue of the Monthly Flash Estimate (MFE) of Electric Power Data is available on EIAs Electricity page. This issue provides early highlights of September, 2009 electricity data. In September 2009, retail sales of electricity decreased by 3.9 percent compared to September 2008. The average U.S. retail price of electricity decreased 1.3 percent in September 2009 compared to the previous year.

Caribbean Fact Sheet

The islands of the Caribbean basin are predominantly net energy importers, with the exception of Trinidad and Tobago. Some islands, such as Aruba, Curacao, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, are important centers for oil refining and storage, due to their proximity to the U.S. market. In recent years, there has been concern that higher global oil prices will impair the Caribbean economies, as they are highly dependent upon oil for the energy needs. In response, the island nations have been discussing ways to promote alternative energy sources and better integrate their energy sectors.
