Solar Thermal Collector Manufacturing Activities 2008

In 2008, total solar thermal collector shipments increased nearly 12 percent from a year ago to almost 17 million square feet. Even with this increase, total shipments were 18 percent below the 2006 level.
Quarterly Coal Report (QCR) - 3rd Quarter 2009

aggregated quarterly historical coal data for 2003 through 3rd Quarter
2009. This report now includes data for coke and breeze commercial
sales, steam and metallurgical coal imports by Customs District, coke
import and export prices, and average quality for receipts at commercial
and institutional coal users. All data for 2007 are final. All data for
2008 are final, with the exception of other industrial consumption,
electric power sector consumption and stocks. All data for 2009 are
preliminary.

Performance Profiles of Major Energy Producers 2008

Performance Profiles of Major Energy Producers 2008 (Performance Profiles 2008), a legislatively mandated annual report to the U.S. Congress, was released on December 18, 2009. Performance Profiles 2008 presents a comprehensive financial review and analysis of the domestic and worldwide operations of the major U.S.-based energy-producing companies. The report examines the majors' operations primarily on a consolidated corporate level, by individual lines of business and business segments, and by various geographic regions. Major findings of Performance Profiles 2008 include:
* Net income fell 32 percent (in constant 2008 dollars) to $87 billion in 2008 from $127 billion in 2007. FRS companies earned a 16-percent return on stockholders' equity (ROE) in 2008, considerably below the average of 25 percent from 2004 to 2007.
* Oil and natural gas production continued to be the most profitable business segment, contributing $72 billion in net income, but this was a decline of 19 percent from 2007. Return on net investment in place (ROI) fell to 13 percent in 2008 from 17 percent in 2007.
* Net income in the refining/marketing segment fell 55 percent from 2007 for FRS companies. ROI for domestic and foreign refining/marketing were nearly identical in 2007, but in 2008, domestic ROI declined to 3 percent and foreign ROI increased to 26 percent, the highest since 1980.
* Cash flow from operations increased 13 percent from 2007 to $220 billion in 2008, despite the decline in net income. The largest use of cash was for capital expenditures, which increased 18 percent from 2007 to $199 billion in 2008, second only to 2006 as the highest ever reported in the FRS survey.
* Expenditures for exploration, development, property acquisition, and production (E&P) increased 31 percent from 2007 to $216 billion in 2008, the highest ever reported on the FRS survey.
* Worldwide production of oil (crude oil and natural gas liquids combined) by the FRS companies declined in 2008 while FRS companies' worldwide oil reserve additions increased 2 percent. Worldwide production of natural gas increased while worldwide natural gas reserve additions fell as the large decline in additions for the U.S. Onshore by itself exceeded increases from five foreign regions.
* Average worldwide finding costs for FRS companies jumped 26 percent from the previous period to $23.84 per barrel of oil equivalent (boe) in the 2006-2008 period. Lifting costs (also called production costs) increased 24 percent from 2007 to $12.59 per boe in 2008.
* Capital expenditures for the FRS companies' domestic refining/marketing segment increased 24 percent from 2007 to $26 billion in 2008 while foreign refining/marketing capital expenditures increased 11 percent.

EIA's primary report of recent energy statistics: total energy production, consumption, and trade; energy prices; overviews of petroleum, natural gas, coal, electricity, nuclear energy, renewable energy, and international petroleum; carbon dioxide emissions; and data unit conversions. New this month is Section 12, "Environment," with carbon dioxide emissions from energy consumption by source and by sector. MER data show that in the first 9 months of 2009, U.S. carbon dioxide emissions from energy consumption fell to 4,049 million metric tons of carbon dioxide, down 7 percent from the first 9 months of last year. New 2006 Manufacturing Energy Consumption Survey (MECS)

EIA has released tables covering energy intensities, electricity demand and onsite generation,
and energy consumption by value of shipment and employment size categories. In addition,
consumption tables broken out by manufacturing industry type have been revised. For
the most part, the revisions are minor and are indicated on the tables by accompanying
"R's".
Additional tables such as end use, fuel switching, purchases, expenditures,
energy-management, and floor space will be released via this site in the coming
weeks.

Electric Power Monthly September 2009 data

The latest EPM issue (December 2009) is now available on EIA's Electricity page. Data are for September 2009, during which net generation in the United States dropped by 3.0 percent and consumption of coal for power generation was down by 13.8 percent compared to September 2008. The average retail price of electricity for September 2009 was 10.21 cents per kilowatthour (kWh), 1.8 percent lower than August 2009 when the average retail price of electricity was 10.40 cents per kWh, and 1.3 percent lower than September 2008, when the price was 10.34 cents per kWh.

The AEO2010 presents long-term projections of energy supply, demand, and prices through 2035, which are based on results from EIAs National Energy Modeling System (NEMS). The AEO2010 Early Release only includes the reference case. The full publication, including many additional cases examining energy markets, will be released in March 2010.
