International Petroleum Monthly - March 2010

The International Petroleum Monthly (IPM) is the Energy Information Administration's primary report of recent international petroleum (oil) statistics. This report includes world petroleum production statistics through January 2010. The IPM also includes estimates for petroleum demand, stocks, and imports for the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries through December 2009.

OPEC Revenues Fact Sheet

Based on projections from the EIA April 2010 Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO), members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) could earn $769 billion of net oil export revenues in 2010 and $828 billion in 2011. Last year, OPEC earned $573 billion in net oil export revenues, a 41 percent decrease from 2008. Saudi Arabia earned the largest share of these earnings, $154 billion, representing 27 percent of total OPEC revenues. On a per-capita basis, OPEC net oil export earning reached $1,554 in 2009, a 42 percent decrease from 2008.

It includes a detailed statistical analysis of coal production, consumption, exports, imports, stocks, and delivered coal prices. The article also covers regional and State-level coal production, coal consumption at the National level, as well as some of the developments in the coal industry that occurred in 2009. A Comparison of EIA-782 Petroleum Product Price and Volume Data with Other Sources, 1999 to 2008

This article compares annual average prices reported from the EIA-782 survey series for residential No. 2 distillate, onhighway diesel fuel, retail regular motor gasoline, refiner No. 2 fuel oil for resale, refiner No. 2 diesel fuel for resale, refiner regular motor gasoline for resale, and refiner kerosene-type jet fuel for resale with annual average prices reported by other sources. In terms of volume, it compares EIA-782C Prime Supplier annual volumes for motor gasoline (all grades), distillate fuel oil, kerosene-type jet fuel and residual fuel oil with annual volumes from other sources. The other sources used for comparison in this article were the EIA-821 survey, EIA-878 survey, EIA-888 survey, Petroleum Supply Annual, Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Consumer Price Indexes (CPI) and the Producer Price Index (PPI), OPIS (Oil Price Information Service), and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).

EIA's primary report of recent energy statistics: total energy production, consumption, and trade; energy prices; overviews of petroleum, natural gas, coal, electricity, nuclear energy, renewable energy, and international petroleum; carbon dioxide emissions; and data unit conversions. The first complete set of preliminary 2009 statistics show: U.S. total energy consumption at 95 quadrillion Btu (down 5% compared with 2008); U.S. total energy production at 73 quadrillion Btu (down slightly compared with 2008); and U.S. net imports of energy at 23 quadrillion Btu (down 12% compared with 2008). 2006 Energy Consumption by Manufacturers--Data Tables

The Energy Consumed as a Fuel by End Use tables have been incorporated in the current 2006 MECS data tables web page.
These tables show how manufacturers use the major fuels, including electricity. End-uses shown include boiler fuel, process heat, machine drive, process cooling, and non-process usages. Electricity usages are shown in terms of both total consumption including onsite generation and net electricity which excludes onsite generation that would be embodied in the consumption of other fuels.
The distribution of major end-uses was remarkably similar to what it was in 2002. In 2006, Boiler Fuel accounted for 29 percent of the fuel consumption, direct process 57 percent, and direct nonprocess use 11 percent.
In the next two weeks, EIA will release tables on energy management program participation and square-footage and number of buildings. Purchases, expenditures and prices should follow shortly after that. Finally, fuel-switching tables will be released to complete the standard data release for the 2006 MECS.

Colombia has seen an increase in oil production in recent years following a period of steady decline. The Colombian government has enacted a series of regulatory reforms to make the sector more attractive to foreign investors. In addition, it has implemented a partial privatization of state oil company Ecopetrol in an attempt to revive its upstream oil industry. The security situation in the country has also improved, with few attacks against oil and natural gas infrastructure in recent years.

The March issue of the Monthly Flash Estimate (MFE) of Electric Power Data is available on EIAs Electricity page. This issue provides early highlights of January, 2010 electricity data. In January 2010, retail sales of electricity increase 3.5 percent from January 2009. The average U.S. retail price of electricity decreased 3.9 percent in January 2010 compared to the previous year.
Financial News for Independent Energy Companies, Fourth Quarter 2009

This report reviews recent financial performance of independent U.S. energy companies. Data presented are for September through December 2009. Independent energy companies reported an increase in income in the fourth quarter of 2009 (Q409) to $2.2 billion, partially rebounding from the low overall earnings and large losses for producers in Q408, but still below the average Q4 level of the prior 5 years. Natural gas prices, refining margins, and the oil and gas drilling rig counts were down from the year-ago quarter, while oil prices rose. The report uses a new, more visual format. The next update, for January through March, will be released in June 2010. The report can be found on the EIA Web site at http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/perfpro/news_i/ .
Also recently released was Financial News for Major Energy Companies, Fourth Quarter 2009, which can be found at http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/perfpro/news_m/ . Net income for these companies increased 300 percent over that of Q408, but was 37 percent below the fourth-quarter average for 2004-2008.

The files contain electricity sales, revenue and price data, as well as Demand Side Management (DSM), Green Pricing, Net Metering, Dispersed and Distributed generation data. The data geographic coverage is the 50 States, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Territories.
Annual Energy Outlook Retrospective Review: Evaluation of Projections in Past Editions (1982-2009)

This report is a comparison between realized energy outcomes and the projections included in previous editions of the AEO. Each year, this comparison adds the projections from the most recent AEO and updates the historical data to the most recently available. The comparison summarizes the relationship of the AEO reference case projections since 1982 to realized outcomes by calculating the average absolute percent differences for several of the major variables for AEO82 through AEO2009.

Electric Power Monthly

The latest EPM issue March 2010 is now available on EIA's Electricity page. Data are for December 2009, during which net generation in the United States grew by 1.9 percent and consumption of coal for power generation was down by 0.9 percent compared to December 2008. The average retail price of electricity for December 2009 was 9.44 cents per kilowatthour (kWh), 1.4 percent lower than December 2009 when the average retail price of electricity was 9.57 cents per kWh.
