International Petroleum Monthly - June 2010

The International Petroleum Monthly (IPM) is the Energy Information Administration's primary report of recent international petroleum (oil) statistics. This report includes world petroleum production statistics through April 2010. The IPM also includes estimates for petroleum demand, stocks, and imports for the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries through March 2010.

Monthly Biodiesel Production Report--June 2010

This is the second issue of the Monthly Biodiesel Production Report. It presents data for all of 2008 and monthly data for January through June 2009. Data include inventory held by biodiesel producers, production capacity, production, sales quantities and sales revenue. Production capacity is reported at the National and State levels. Reporting of biodiesel feedstock utilization is introduced in this issue. Data for the third quarter of 2009 are due to be published in July 2010, and final annual and monthly data for 2009 are due in September 2010.
State Energy Data System

The State Energy Data System (SEDS) provides a complete set of annual State-level estimates of energy production, consumption, prices, and expenditures by energy source and sector through 2008. Production and consumption estimates are available in physical units and British thermal units (Btu) from 1960 through 2008. Price and expenditure estimates, in dollars per million Btu and millions of dollars, respectively, are available from 1970 through 2008. In 2008, U.S. total energy consumption was 99 quadrillion Btu, a 2-percent decrease from 2007; U.S. energy production totaled 73 quadrillion Btu, a 2.5-percent increase from 2007. Texas was the top energy-consuming State, using 12 quadrillion Btu in 2008, followed by California (8 quadrillion Btu) and Florida (4 quadrillion Btu). The top energy-producing States were Texas (12 quadrillion Btu), Wyoming (11 quadrillion Btu), and Louisiana (6 quadrillion Btu). Total energy consumption expenditures in 2008 were estimated to be $1,412 billion, an amount equivalent to almost 10 percent of the U.S. gross domestic product.

EIA's primary report of recent energy statistics: total energy production, consumption, and trade; energy prices; overviews of petroleum, natural gas, coal, electricity, nuclear energy, renewable energy, and international petroleum; carbon dioxide emissions; and data unit conversions. Preliminary MER data show that U.S. primary energy consumption increased by 2% in the first 3 months of 2010 compared with the first 3 months of 2009, due primarily to increases in the consumption of coal, natural gas, and biomass. U.S. energy imports decreased by 9%, due primarily to a decrease in petroleum imports; U.S. energy exports increased by 9%, due primarily to increases in coal and petroleum product exports. The oil sector is a crucial component of Mexico's economy: while its relative importance to the general Mexican economy has declined in the long term, the oil sector still generates over 15 percent of the country's export earnings.

Refinery Capacity Report

Data series include fuel, electricity, and steam purchased for consumption at the refinery; refinery receipts of crude oil by method of transportation; current and projected capacities for atmospheric crude oil distillation, downstream charge, production, and storage capacities. Respondents are operators of all operating and idle petroleum refineries (including new refineries under construction) and refineries shut down during the previous year, located in the 50 States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Guam, and other U.S. possessions.
Trends in U.S. Residential Natural Gas Consumption

This report presents an analysis of residential natural gas consumption trends in the United States through 2009 and analyzes consumption trends for the United States as a whole (1990 through 2009) and for each Census Division (1998 through 2009). It examines a long-term downward per-customer consumption trend and analyzes whether this trend persists across Census Divisions. The report also examines some of the factors that have contributed to the decline in per-customer consumption. To provide a more meaningful measure of per-customer consumption, EIA adjusted consumption data presented in the report for weather.

(CLOB) The June issue of the Monthly Flash Estimate (MFE) of Electric Power Data is available on EIA's Electricity page. This issue provides early highlights of April, 2010 electricity data. In April 2010, total electric power generation in the United States decreased 1.2 percent compared to April 2009. The average U.S. retail price of electricity decreased 0.6 percent in April 2010 compared to the previous year.

Worldwide wind power generation exceeded 200 billion kilowatthours in 2008, which is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of over 18 million average households in the United States. Wind generation increased by about 25% from 2007 to 2008, and has more than tripled since 2003. This growth is mostly due to capacity increases in the United States, China, India, and Western Europe. Despite this growth, the world still generated less than 1% of its total electricity from wind power in 2008.

The latest EPM issue (June 2010) is now available on EIA's Electricity page. Data are for March 2010, during which net generation in the United States grew by 0.3 percent and consumption of coal for power generation grew by 6.4 percent compared to March 2009. The average retail price of electricity for February 2010 was 9.56 cents per kilowatthour (kWh), 1.6 percent lower than March 2009 when the average retail price of electricity was 9.72 cents per kWh.
