Quarterly Coal Report (QCR) - 3rd Quarter 2011

Jan 11, 2012
Provides detailed quarterly coal data for July-September 2011 and aggregated quarterly historical coal data for 2005 through 3rd Quarter 2011. This report now includes data on co-firing fuels and carbon capture equipment from the Form EIA-3 survey and the heat content of coal from the Form EIA-5 survey. Both forms will collect data on coal origin by MSHA ID, mercury content, and commodity cost. Beginning with 2nd Quarter 2011, data on co-firing fuels and carbon capture equipment will be included from the EIA-3 survey. Form EIA-5 data will include the heat content of coal. U.S. coal production in the 3rd Quarter 2011 totaled 274.6 million short tons. Coal exports dropped by 3.8 percent to 26.0 million short tons from 27.0 million short tons in the 2nd Quarter 2011. U.S. coal imports increased by 4.9 percent to 3.6 million short tons from 2nd Quarter 2011. During the 3rd Quarter 2011, consumer coal stocks fell to 153.0 million short tons from 174.3 million short tons in 2nd Quarter 2011. Consumption increased to 279.6 million short tons in 3rd Quarter 2011 from 242.2 million short tons in 2nd Quarter 2011 due to the seasonal increase in coal use to generate electricity. All data for 2010 and prior years are final. All data for 2011 are preliminary.

U.S. industrial natural gas consumption expected to hit records in 2026 and 2027 ›

We forecast U.S. industrial natural gas consumption will climb to record highs through 2027 in our latest Short-Term Energy Outlook. Industrial consumption averaged a record 23.6 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) in 2025, 1% more than the record 23.4 Bcf/d reached in 2023. In our forecast, consumption gradually increases further in 2026 and in 2027 as we expect the natural gas-weighted manufacturing index to also rise slightly over this period. More
