Monthly Flash Estimates of Electric Power Data

Jul 20, 2005
contains preliminary estimates of selected national monthly electricity data. It serves as an early release (approximately 30 days) of the more detailed Electric Power Monthly report.
In May 2005 retail sales declined by 3.5 percent from May 2004 due to milder weather. The drop in retail sales was matched by a 3.1 percent drop in generation. Year-to-date retail sales are almost unchanged from 2004, up only 0.1 percent. While all fossil fuel generation showed a decline, hydroelectric generation continued its upward trend during the rainy spring season, up 12.1 percent from May 2004. Due to planned or forced outages and temporary derates, nuclear generation is down 3.2 percent year-to-date compared to 2004. Average retail prices continue to run ahead of 2004, up 3.7 percent year-to-date. The decline in coal generation contributed to rebuilding of coal stocks, which grew almost 3 percent in May 2005. However, sub-bituminous coal stocks declined due to rail transportation problems in the West. http://www.eia.doe.gov/cneaf/electricity/epm/flash/flash.html.
