May 31, 2006
Excel spreadsheets with time series data for the years 1980-2004 on: (1) the consumption and production of dry natural gas measured in both cubic feet and British thermal units (Btu) and (2) gross heat content of both dry natural gas consumption and dry natural gas production. Also included are Excel spreadsheets with detailed data for natural gas production and dry natural gas supply and disposition (including imports and exports) for the year 2003 and estimates of proved reserves of natural gas as of January 1, 2005. (Excel spreadsheets with time series data for the years 1980-2004 on carbon dioxide emissions from the consumption and flaring of natural gas measured in both million metric tons of carbon dioxide and million metric tons carbon equivalent will be released later.) Important Notes: (1) The Energy Information Administration reviews its databases each year and important revisions are made to the time series data of individual countries during this review. Therefore, data in the International Energy Annual 2004 may have been substantially revised relative to previous editions. (2) In this edition, we have also changed the names of and the countries included in two of our geographic regions (Western Europe changed to Europe and Eastern Europe & Former U.S.S.R. changed to Eurasia) and added the country of East Timor to the Asia and Oceania region. Coal remains competitive for power generation in the central United States ›

In the first four months of 2026, electricity, natural gas, and coal prices suggested continued favorable economics for coal generation in MISO. The dark spread of coal, the difference between the fuel costs for coal-fired generation and the wholesale electricity price, in the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) region outpaced a similar measure of revenue relative to fuel costs for natural gas-fired generators known as the spark spread.
