Residential Natural Gas Prices: What Consumers Should Know

This brochure provides information for residential natural gas customers, such as where natural gas comes from and what consumers pay for in their natural gas bills. Additionally, there is a discussion of factors that have been a key influence on natural gas prices in 2006. An overview of EIA¿s Short-Term Energy Outlook that was released on October 10, 2006 is provided. Although natural gas bills are expected to decline on average this winter, they remain relatively high. The brochure concludes with some information on what residential customers might do to cope with or reduce their natural gas bills.
Monthly Cost and Quality of Fuels Database Released

The final 2005 database for the Form EIA-423, "Cost and Quality of Fuels for Electric Plants Report," is now available on EIA's Electricity page. The data file contains data on monthly deliveries of fossil fuels to nonutility generating facilities. Included are the specific energy source, quantity of fuel delivered, the Btu content, sulfur content, ash content, coal state and county of origin, coal mine type (surface/underground), as well as the supplier of fuel. Fuel cost data collected on this survey will not be made available to the public due to it being classified as confidential. The datafile includes facilities with a fossil-fueled nameplate generating capacity of 50 or more megawatts.

EIA's primary report of recent energy statistics: total energy production, consumption, and trade; energy prices; overviews of petroleum, natural gas, coal, electricity, nuclear energy, renewable energy, and international petroleum; and data unit conversions. Preliminary statistics comparing the first three quarters of 2006 versus the first three quarters of 2005 show that U.S. crude oil production was down 4 percent; U.S. petroleum imports were up 1 percent; and U.S. petroleum products supplied, which is a measure of consumption, was down 1 percent. State Energy Consumption, Price, and Expenditure Estimates (SEDS)

Comprehensive annual State-level energy consumption, price, and expenditure statistics through 2003 are now available at State Energy Consumption, Price, and Expenditure Estimates (SEDS). The State data are estimates of consumption for all energy sources by end-use sector beginning in 1960 and estimates of prices and expenditures for the same energy sources by end-use sector beginning in 1970. This release completes all State and sector totals through 2003 and includes State rankings of consumption, prices, and expenditures by major energy source and end-use sector. Data are provided in tables of PDF and HTML format, as well as in comma-separated data files that are spreadsheet and database compatible. Detailed documentation of data sources and estimation methodologies are also provided.

Annual Power Plant and Combined Heat and Power Plant Database Released

The final 2005 database for the Form EIA-906, "Power Plant Report," and Form EIA-920, "Combined Heat and Power Plant Report," is now available on the EIA's Electricity page in Excel format. The file contains data on net generation, fuel consumption, and fossil fuel stocks for electric power plants and combined heat and power plants in the United States. Additionally, the 2005 Nonutility Source and Disposition database (energy sources from generation and incoming energy and disposition from station use, direct use, sales for resale, retail sales, and other use) is released. The final 2005 data replaces the preliminary 2005 data previously published.
Monthly Flash Estimate (MFE)

The October, 2006 issue of the Monthly Flash Estimate (MFE) of Electric Power Data is now available on EIA¿s Electricity Publications page. MFE provides an early look at the highlights of the upcoming Electric Power Monthly publication and presents tables of electricity generation, fuel consumption for generation, fossil fuel stocks, and average retail sales and prices of electricity. MFE precedes the next issue of EPM by three weeks. The current issue covers an early review of the August, 2006 electricity data. The publication is available both in PDF and Excel formats and can be accessed at the following address:
