Short-Term Energy Outlook

Global oil prices. The Brent crude oil price averaged $67 per barrel (b) in January, the highest since September 2025, as weather-related events disrupted the global crude oil supply and escalating tensions with Iran put upward pressure on prices. Despite these short-term events, we expect oil prices will decline in 2026, as global oil production exceeds global oil demand, causing oil inventories to rise. Global inventories continue increasing into 2027. We forecast the Brent crude oil price will average $58 per barrel (b) in 2026 and $53/b in 2027.
Quarterly Coal Report—Third Quarter 2025

Third-quarter 2025 U.S. coal exports (22.3 million short tons [MMst]) decreased 0.2% from second-quarter 2025 and decreased 19% from third-quarter 2024. U.S. coal imports in third-quarter 2025 totaled 0.7 MMst. All data for 2024 and previous years are final. All data for 2025 are preliminary.
Quarterly Coal Distribution Report—Third Quarter 2025

The Quarterly Coal Distribution Report (QCDR) provides detailed U.S. domestic coal distribution data (excluding waste coal and imports) for third-quarter 2025 by coal-origin state, coal-destination state, mode of transportation, and consuming sector. Quarterly coal distribution data for all quarters are preliminary and will be updated in the corresponding Annual Coal Distribution Report.

NGM also reports producer-related activities and underground storage data. NGM data on 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia are collected on EIA surveys.

According to our January 2026 report, preliminary estimates indicate that U.S. natural gas production totaled 3.4 quadrillion British thermal units in October 2025, which represented 38% of U.S. total primary energy production.

Data in the January 2026 Electric Power Monthly are for November 2025, when net generation in the United States increased 3.9% from November 2024. Coal consumption for power generation was up 17.9% compared with the previous year. The average residential retail price of electricity was up 5.5% from November 2024.
