Quarterly Coal Report (QCR)—Third-Quarter 2023

Jan 2, 2024
U.S. coal production during the third quarter of 2023 totaled 145.6 million short tons (MMst), which was 2.3% higher than the previous quarter and 5.7% lower than the third quarter of 2022. Third-quarter 2023 U.S. coal exports (24.9 MMst) increased 3.2% from second-quarter 2023 and increased 17.9% from third-quarter 2022. U.S. coal imports in the third quarter of 2023 totaled 1 MMst. All data for 2022 and previous years are final. All data for 2023 are preliminary.

Natural Gas Monthly

Dec 29, 2023
In October 2023, dry natural gas production increased year over year for the month for the 30th consecutive month. Preliminary dry natural gas production in October 2023 was 3,240 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 104.5 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d). Production was 2.2% (2.3 Bcf/d) higher in October 2023 than in October 2022 (102.3 Bcf/d) and the highest for any month since 1973, when we began tracking dry natural gas production. Gross withdrawals also increased from October 2022.

U.S. Oil and Natural Gas Wells by Production Rate

Dec 27, 2023
Our Well Distribution Report presents historical, annual state-level data on well distribution by size and technology and analyzes emerging trends for 2022. Crude oil and natural gas wells drilled horizontally through hydrocarbon-bearing formations are among the most productive wells in the United States. The total number of horizontally drilled wells has increased over 78% since 2014. In 2022, 77% of the more than 912,000 U.S. wells produced less than 15 barrels of oil equivalent per day. These wells are mostly older and drilled vertically.

Short-Term Energy Outlook

Dec 12, 2023
Natural gas prices. The Henry Hub spot price in our forecast averages close to $2.80 per million British thermal units this winter (November—March), down more than 60 cents from our November Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO). The downward revision reflects both a warmer-than-average start to the winter, which has reduced demand for space heating in the residential and commercial sectors, and high natural gas production. These two factors have increased natural gas storage inventories. We forecast U.S. natural gas inventories will end the winter 22% above the five-year average (2018–2022), with more than 2,000 billion cubic feet in storage.
