February Natural Gas Monthly, containing data for December 2025

  • In December 2025, dry natural gas production increased year over year for the 10th straight month. Preliminary dry natural gas production in December 2025 was 3,459 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 111.6 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d). Production was 5.6% (5.9 Bcf/d) higher in December 2025 than in December 2024 (105.7 Bcf/d). Daily dry natural gas production was the highest for any month since 1973, the earliest year in this dataset. Gross withdrawals also increased from December 2024:
    • Gross withdrawals: 4,212 Bcf for the month, or 135.9 Bcf/d
      • A 5.4% increase compared with December 2024 (128.9 Bcf/d)
      • Highest daily rate for any month since 1980, the earliest year in this data set
  • Estimated natural gas consumption in December 2025 was 3,495 Bcf, or 112.7 Bcf/d
    • A 4.0% increase compared with December 2024 (108.5 Bcf/d)
    • Highest daily rate for the month since 2001, the earliest year in this data set
  • The year-over-year average daily rate of dry natural gas consumption in December 2025 increased in three of the four consuming sectors. Natural gas deliveries by consuming sector in December 2025 were:
  • Residential deliveries: 825 Bcf for the month, or 26.6 Bcf/d
    • A 9.0% increase compared with December 2024 (24.4 Bcf/d)
  • Commercial deliveries: 507 Bcf for the month, or 16.4 Bcf/d
    • A 9.3% increase compared with December 2024 (15.0 Bcf/d)
    • Highest daily rate of commercial deliveries for the month since 1973, the earliest year in this data set
  • Industrial deliveries: 797 Bcf for the month, or 25.71 Bcf/d
    • A 0.1% decrease compared with December 2024 (25.74 Bcf/d)
    • Second-highest daily rate of industrial deliveries, despite this decrease, for the month since 2001, the earliest year in this data set
  • Electric power deliveries: 1,047 Bcf for the month, or 33.8 Bcf/d
    • A 1.0% increase compared with December 2024 (33.5 Bcf/d)
    • Highest daily rate of electric power deliveries for the month since 2001, the earliest year in this data set
  • Net natural gas exports (exports minus imports) were 570 Bcf, or 18.4 Bcf/d, in December 2025. This net export volume was the highest for any month since we began tracking net trade in 1973. The United States exported 2.8 times more natural gas than it imported in December 2025 as natural gas imports and exports both increased year over year:
    • Total natural gas imports: 319 Bcf for the month, or 10.3 Bcf/d
      • A 3.2% increase compared with December 2024 (10.0 Bcf/d)
      • Highest rate of natural gas imports for the month since 2010
    • Total natural gas exports: 889 Bcf for the month, or 28.7 Bcf/d
      • A 27.9% increase compared with December 2024 (22.4 Bcf/d)
      • Highest daily rate of natural gas exports for any month since we began tracking them in 1973
      • Liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports: The daily rate of LNG exports in December 2025 was 38.4% higher than the daily rate in December 2024, the highest for any month since we began tracking LNG exports in 1997. In December 2025, the United States exported 18.4 Bcf/d of LNG to 29 countries.

Annual Summary

This edition of the Natural Gas Monthly includes annual totals for 2025 for the first time:
  • Dry natural gas production increased 4.5% for the year, from 103.1 Bcf/d in 2024 to 107.7 Bcf/d in 2025. Total dry natural gas production was the highest on record for any year since we began tracking it in 1930.
  • Estimated natural gas consumption increased 1.7%, from 90.3 Bcf/d in 2024 to 91.8 Bcf/d in 2025. Total natural gas consumption was the highest on record for any year since we began tracking it in 1949.
  • Total imports of natural gas increased 0.6%, from 8.59 Bcf/d in 2024 to 8.64 Bcf/d in 2025. Total natural gas imports were the highest for any year since 2011.
  • Total exports of natural gas increased 16.7%, from 21.1 Bcf/d in 2024 to 24.6 Bcf/d in 2025. LNG exports increased 26.5%, from 11.9 Bcf/d in 2024 to 15.1 Bcf/d in 2025. These annual export totals were the highest on record for any year since we began tracking natural gas exports in 1973.
