figure data

July Natural Gas Monthly, containing data for May 2025

  • In May 2025, dry natural gas production increased year over year for the fifth time in the last six months. Preliminary dry natural gas production in May 2025 was 3,327 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 107.3 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d). Production was 5.7% (5.8 Bcf/d) higher in May 2025 than in May 2024 (101.5 Bcf/d). Dry gas production was the highest for the month since 1973, the earliest year in this data set. Gross withdrawals also increased from May 2024:
    • Gross withdrawals: 4,046 Bcf for the month, or 130.5 Bcf/d
      • A 5.5% increase compared with May 2024 (123.7 Bcf/d)
      • Highest daily rate for the month since 1980, the earliest year in this data set
  • Estimated natural gas consumption in May 2025 was 2,313 Bcf, or 74.6 Bcf/d
    • A 1.2% decrease compared with May 2024 (75.5 Bcf/d)
  • The year-over-year average daily rate of dry natural gas consumption in May 2025 increased in three of the four consuming sectors. Natural gas deliveries by consuming sector in May 2025 were:
    • Residential deliveries: 188 Bcf for the month, or 6.1 Bcf/d
      • An 8.7% increase compared with May 2024 (5.6 Bcf/d)
      • Second-lowest daily rate of residential deliveries, despite this increase, for the month since 2018
    • Commercial deliveries: 191 Bcf for the month, or 6.2 Bcf/d
      • A 7.9% increase compared with May 2024 (5.7 Bcf/d)
      • Highest daily rate of commercial deliveries for the month since 2002
    • Industrial deliveries: 694 Bcf for the month, or 22.4 Bcf/d
      • A 1.2% increase compared with May 2024 (22.1 Bcf/d)
      • Highest daily rate of industrial deliveries for the month since we began using the current methodology for them in 2001
    • Electric power deliveries: 972 Bcf for the month, or 31.4 Bcf/d
      • A 7.0% decrease compared with May 2024 (33.7 Bcf/d)
  • Net natural gas imports (imports minus exports) were -496 Bcf, or -16.0 Bcf/d, in May 2025, the lowest net imports daily rate for the month since we began tracking net imports in 1973, making the United States a net natural gas exporter. The United States exported 3.1 times more natural gas than it imported in May 2025. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports in May 2025 were 18.5% higher than the LNG exports daily rate in May 2024; the LNG exports daily rate was the highest for the month since we began tracking LNG exports in 1997. In May 2025, the United States exported 14.1 Bcf/d of LNG to 35 countries. Natural gas imports and exports both increased year over year in May 2025:
    • Total imports: 241 Bcf for the month, or 7.8 Bcf/d
      • A 1.3% increase compared with May 2024 (7.7 Bcf/d)
      • Second-highest daily rate of natural gas imports for the month since 2017
    • Total exports: 736 Bcf for the month, or 23.7 Bcf/d
      • A 13.9% increase compared with May 2024 (20.8 Bcf/d)
      • Highest daily rate of natural gas exports for the month since we began tracking them in 1973
