Electric Power Monthly

Mar 3, 2004
The latest issue is now available on EIA's Electricity page. The publication was redesigned beginning with the April 2003 issue to incorporate improved statistics and provide more detailed data. This report now shows tables that are separated into two main categories: Electric Power Sector (Electric Utilities and Independent Power Producers) and Combined Heat and Power Producers (Commercial and Industrial.) All data pertaining to these categories are presented together, thus providing an integrated view of the electric power industry. Additionally, the level of aggregation was also revised. The lowest level of aggregation is at the State level, with greater detail available in other Web products. Also, the publication provides rolling 12-month totals in the national overviews, as appropriate. Appendix D describes the reasoning behind the changes and their effect on electric power publications. View an on-line summary of the publication.

Financial Reporting System Data, 1977-2002

Feb 19, 2004
Today the Energy Information Administration released the latest financial and operating data that it collects from the major U.S. energy companies on its Financial Reporting System (FRS)Form EIA-28. The survey data system is designed to permit review of the functional performance (petroleum, coal, other energy, and non-energy) of the major U.S. energy-producing companies in total, as well as by specific functions and geographic areas of operation. The financial reporting schedules obtain data on revenues, costs, and profits, thereby indicating financial flows and performance characteristics. In addition, Form EIA-28 collects balance sheet data (i.e., accumulated property, plant, and equipment, etc.), along with data on new investment in these accounts. To complement the financial data, a series of statistical schedules are included to trace physical activity patterns and to evaluate several physical/financial relationships. The Form EIA-28 is designed to take advantage of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Form 10-K filed by the companies. This structure presents both the Form 10-K figures and statistics and the more detailed data required by the FRS system. The data are in excel spreadsheet files, and are located on EIA's ftp server for easy downloading. The files have been updated to include the latest year of data, 2002, so that now the series covers the years 1977-2002.

Increasing fuel efficiency leads to decreasing gasoline consumption ›

Annual motor gasoline consumption in the United States decreased in 2025 even as vehicle miles traveled (VMT) increased because of increasing fuel efficiency, a trend we forecast will continue in 2026 and 2027. U.S. motor gasoline consumption averaged 8.9 million barrels per day (b/d) in 2025, 1% less than 2024 and 4% less than pre-pandemic demand in 2019. In our April Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO), we estimate that motor gasoline consumption will continue to decline as forecast fuel efficiency increases and VMT growth slows. More
