Monthly Nuclear Generation, by Reactor, by State

Sep 23, 2004
table reports that cumulative nuclear generation in 2004 remains higher (as of July) than in either the comparable period of 2003 or in the record year, 2002. In addition, the table is revised to reflect increases reported in 2003 data net capacity (based on net summer capability). The revisions resulted in an increase of 434 net megawatts (electric) and a new preliminary total of 99,218 new Megawatts (electric). By comparison, the total capacities of the two smallest of the Nation's 104 commercial nuclear reactors are 476 net MW(e) for Nebraska's Fort Calhoun unit and 498 net MW(e) for the Ginna reactor in New York. Revisions for the individual reactors appear as final in the 2003table.

Coal Transportation Rates and Trends

Sep 17, 2004
Coal Transportation Rates and Trends includes a short report, 21 data graphs, and a 60 data tables. The tables can be opened as 60 Excel spreadsheets and can be reconfigured and/or used in analyses or to produce new graphs. The spreadsheets include aggregated totals, subtotals, and weighted averages for coal transportation rates by various modes, origin and destination regions, mileages, and more. By aggregating the data EIA is able to provide representative coal transportation rates in regions where all or most respondents require withholding of sensitive individual data. On the other hand, weighted average rate data, as well data such as weighted average distances shipped or contract lengths, may provide statistically more useful information than do scattered individual data.

Financial News for Independent Energy Companies

Sep 17, 2004
Today the Energy Information Administration released the "Financial News for Independent Energy Companies" for the second quarter of 2004. The report reviews recent trends in the financial performance of independent energy companies, which are typically smaller than the majors and do not have integrated production/refining operations. Earnings for the 50 independent energy companies included in this report grew 75 percent in the second quarter of 2004 over earnings in the second quarter of 2003. All three types of energy companies included in this report -- independent oil and natural gas producers, oil field service companies, and refiner/marketers -- had increased income over the year-ago quarter, as crude oil prices, natural gas prices, and the gross refining margin all increased.

Electric Power Monthly

Sep 14, 2004
The latest issue is now available on EIA's Electricity page. The publication for September 2004 presents for the first time, graphs in the executive summary showing the share of generation by energy source, the share of generation by sector, generation by the three major energy sources (coal, nuclear and natural gas), and the average retail price of electricity by end use sector. Beginning with the June 2004 issue the publication was redesigned to provide users of electric power data with more information. For example, petroleum was separated into petroleum liquids and petroleum coke, and hydroelectric generation was categorized into conventional hydroelectric and hydroelectric pumped storage. Information on consumption was expanded to include not only consumption for electric for electric generation but also consumption for useful thermal output and total consumption. Tables were added to show historical electric generation by other renewable energy sources, plants that were sold or transferred, and receipts in British thermal units as well as by physical units. In addition, columns were added to existing receipt and cost tables displaying the percent of consumption of and plant count by fuel type. View an on-line summary of the publication.
