EIA Solicits Public Comment on Weekly Natural Gas Storage Revision Policy

EIA issued a Federal Register notice soliciting public comments on its Policy for Revisions to the Weekly Natural Gas Storage Report (WNGSR). Information about submitting comments is included in the notice. The comment period ends February 7, 2005.

Financial News for Independent Energy Companies

Earnings for the 50 independent energy companies included in this report grew 91 percent in the third quarter of 2004 over earnings in the third quarter of 2003. All three types of energy companies included in this report -- independent oil and natural gas producers, oil field service companies, and refiner/marketers -- had increased income over the year-ago quarter, as crude oil prices, natural gas prices, and the gross refining margin all increased. Foreign Direct Investment in U.S. Energy in 2002

Today the Energy Information Administration released the "Foreign Direct Investment in U.S. Energy" report for 2002. The report describes the role of direct foreign ownership of U.S. energy enterprises with respect to their energy operations, capital investments, and net foreign investment flows (including net loans). In addition, since energy investments are made in a global context, the report examines patterns of direct investment in foreign energy enterprises by U.S.-based companies.

Foreign Direct Investment Acquisitions and Divestitures in 2002

Today the Energy Information Administration released the "Foreign Direct Investment Acquistions and Divestitures" report for 2002. The report reviews acquisitions of U.S. energy assets by foreign investors in 2002. Foreign direct acquisitions are purchases, directly or indirectly, by the original foreign investor resulting in the ownership of 10 percent or more of the voting securities of an incorporated U.S. business enterprise or the equivalent interest in an unincorporated U.S. business.

Annual Steam-Electric Plant Operation and Design Database

The year 2003 Form EIA-767 final database is now available on EIA's Electricity page in Excel format. The data file contains information regarding steam-electric plant operations and equipment design, including boilers, generators, cooling systems, flue gas particulate collectors, flue gas desulfurization units, stacks and flues.

Nuclear Generation by State, by Reactor

According to preliminary data, U.S. nuclear output continues to outpace that of 2003 and the record year of 2002. In October 2004, both the monthly total and the cumulative total were 4 percent higher than in 2003.

Electric Power Monthly

The latest issue is now available on EIA's Electricity page. The publication for December 2004 presents preliminary electricity sales and revenue data for the Transportation Sector for 2004. In January 2004, EIA revised its survey to specifically collect transportation data. These data consist primarily of electricity delivered to and consumed by local, regional and metropolitan mass transportation systems. Data being published in the December 2004 EPM include January through September monthly 2004 data. Comments on the Transportation data have also been included in the Technical Notes. Historical copies of the EPM tables in Excel format have also been posted on the EIA website, dating back to the May 2003 publication of the EPM. State Energy Consumption Estimates, 1960-2001

This update of the State energy consumption data by end-use sector and fuel type includes the EIA-wide revisions for 1989 forward in the reporting of nonutility power producers and electric utilities consumption together in a new electric power sector.

Financial News for Major Energy Companies

Reviews recent financial performance of major U.S. energy companies. Data presented are for July through September 2004. During this period the majors reported overall net income of $16.4 billion on revenues of $231.0 billion. The level of net income was 56 percent higher than during the same period of 2003.
