May 2005 Natural Gas Monthly

May 27, 2005
Natural and supplemental gas production, supply, consumption, disposition, storage, imports, exports, and prices in the United States. This report is updated during the first week of each month.

Natural Gas Section of the International Energy Annual 2003

May 26, 2005
Excel spreadsheets with time series data for the years 1980-2003 on: (1) the consumption and production of dry natural gas measured in both cubic feet and British thermal units (Btu); (2) carbon dioxide emissions from the consumption and flaring of natural gas measured in both million metric tons of carbon dioxide and million metric tons carbon equivalent; and (3) gross heat content of both dry natural gas consumption and dry natural gas production. Also included are Excel spreadsheets with detailed data for natural gas production and dry natural gas supply and disposition (including imports and exports) for the year 2002 and estimates of proved reserves of natural gas as of January 1, 2004. Important Note: The Energy Information Administration reviews its databases each year and important revisions are made to the time series data of individual countries during this review. Therefore, data in the International Energy Annual 2003 may have been substantially revised relative to previous editions.

Monthly Energy Review

May 25, 2005
EIA's primary report of recent energy statistics: total energy production, consumption, and trade; energy prices; overviews of petroleum, natural gas, coal, electricity, nuclear energy, renewable energy, and international petroleum; and data unit conversions. For January-April, preliminary statistics show petroleum consumption up 1.2 percent in 2005 vs. 2004; petroleum production down 1.7 percent; and petroleum net imports up 4.7 percent. Included in this month's report is an Energy Plug on EIA's Impacts of Modeled Recommendations of the National Commission on Energy Policy. See What's New in the Monthly Energy Review for a record of recent changes in this report.

Nuclear Generation Tables

May 25, 2005
Nuclear generation continues modest decline in 2005. Nuclear generation in January 2005 was only one percent less than in January 2004. It is wise to not attribute too much significance to a single month's data, especially when the difference is modest, but historically, record annual outputs have begun with strong showings in January. According to preliminary data, February 2005 output dropped even lower, 4.9 percent less than in February 2004. The State Summary Table (PDF, EXCEL) or the reformatted Reactor-level Table (PDF, EXCEL) now include the February data.

EIA¿s Natural Gas Division Survey Form Comments

May 20, 2005
The public comment period for the natural gas forms clearance package, seeking a 3-year extension for data collection activities, concluded Friday, May 6. EIA will review all comments before making a final proposal to OMB later this summer. Please contact: Steve Nalley at 202-586-0959 or snalley@eia.doe.gov should you have questions.

EIA Releases New Monthly Flash Estimates of Electric Power Data

May 19, 2005
This is the Energy Information Administration¿s (EIA) new product, Monthly Flash Estimates of Electric Power Data, which contains preliminary estimates of selected national monthly electricity data. This product is released on a regular basis approximately 45 days after the end of the reporting month, and serves as an early release (approximately 30 days) before the more detailed Electric Power Monthly report. Each new release will present national-level data and charts for the reference month, as well as the previous month, year-to-date summation, and rolling 12-month information for electricity generation, fuel consumption, fuel stocks, electricity sales and revenue, and average retail electricity prices. It will also offer a brief summary of the national-level data to put the information into a useful context.

Increasing fuel efficiency leads to decreasing gasoline consumption ›

Annual motor gasoline consumption in the United States decreased in 2025 even as vehicle miles traveled (VMT) increased because of increasing fuel efficiency, a trend we forecast will continue in 2026 and 2027. U.S. motor gasoline consumption averaged 8.9 million barrels per day (b/d) in 2025, 1% less than 2024 and 4% less than pre-pandemic demand in 2019. In our April Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO), we estimate that motor gasoline consumption will continue to decline as forecast fuel efficiency increases and VMT growth slows. More
