Monthly Flash Estimate (MFE)

The April , 2006 issue of the Monthly Flash Estimate (MFE) of Electric Power Data is now available on EIA's Electricity Publications page. MFE provides an early look at the highlights of the upcoming Electric Power Monthly publication and presents tables of electricity generation, fuel consumption for generation, fossil fuel stocks, and average retail sales and prices of electricity. MFE precedes the next issue of EPM by three weeks. The current issue covers an early review of the February, 2006 electricity data. The publication is available both in PDF and Excel formats and can be accessed at the following address: http://www.eia.doe.gov/cneaf/electricity/epm/flash/flash.html

State Hydroelectric Power and Geothermal, Wind, and Solar Energy Consumption Data Through 2003

State-level hydroelectric power and geothermal, wind, and solar energy consumption data through 2003 by sector (residential, commercial, industrial, and electric power) are now available at state updates. The data are provided in physical units (thousand kilowatthours) and British thermal units (Btu). The annual State-level consumption data are available in comma-separated value files for 1960 forward.

South Atlantic Household Electricity Report

EIA¿s new regional report analyzes household electricity consumption in the South Atlantic States. EIA statistics indicate that consumption of electricity was higher in the South Atlantic than nationwide, due in part to hotter summers and a corresponding greater use of air-conditioning, as well as to more wide-spread use of electric heat. A data table provides newly available regional statistics on electricity use for space heating, air-conditioning, water heating, lighting, kitchen and laundry appliances, and home electronic equipment. Natural Gas Residential Choice Programs

EIA Updates Web Site on Retail Gas Competition: The Energy Information Administration (EIA) has updated its web site on the status of natural gas industry restructuring in each state as of December 2005, focusing on the residential customer class. As of December 2005, 21 states and the District of Columbia have legislation or programs in place that allow residential consumers and other small-volume gas users to purchase natural gas from someone other than their traditional utility company.

Historical copies of the EPM tables in Excel format have also been posted on the EIA website, dating back to the May 2003 publication of the EPM. This month¿s report includes the first complete set of preliminary 2005 total energy statistics: U.S. total energy production at 69.1 quadrillion Btu (-1.7% compared with 2004); U.S. net imports of energy at 29.6 quadrillion Btu (+1.5%); and U.S. total energy consumption at 99.8 quadrillion Btu (-0.5%). Duration of power outages in Puerto Rico not caused by major events increased 19% in 2025  ›

In 2025, customers in Puerto Rico experienced an average of 36 hours of power interruptions that were not caused by major events such as hurricanes, 19% more than in 2024. On average, between 2021 and 2025, Puerto Rican customers experience 29 hours of power loss each year. By comparison, electricity customers in the mainland United States generally experience about two hours of electricity interruptions per year without major events. More
