Short-Term Energy Outlook

Oct 6, 2026
We published the 2026–27 edition of the Winter Fuels Outlook in conjunction with this month’s Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO). Nationally, we expect homes that use natural gas and propane as their main source of space heating—collectively around half of U.S. households—will spend less on average on those fuels than last winter. We forecast homes that use electricity as the main heating source will spend slightly more this winter. Fuel spending is set to rise the most for homes that primarily use heating oil, which make up about 3% of U.S. households and are located mostly in the Northeast part of the country. These homes face heating oil prices that are up more than 30% from last winter, although we expect heating oil expenditures to increase by 21%, offset by a milder winter this year in the Northeast. On average across the United States, our forecast assumes temperatures this winter will be about the same as last winter and the previous 10-winter average.

Short-Term Energy Outlook

Sep 9, 2026
Global oil market assumptions. We forecast oil production in the Middle East will rise in the coming months because of gradually increasing flows through the Strait of Hormuz and the use of alternative routes out of the region, according to our September 2026 Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO). However, we assume some constraints to exporting oil from the Middle East will persist through the end of the year, which keeps crude oil production in the region below pre-conflict averages until the second quarter of 2027 (2Q27).

Mixed outlook for energy expenditures this winter  ›

We expect energy expenditures this winter to vary because of diverging trends in energy prices among fuels and regional variation in forecast temperatures. We expect that lower prices for natural gas and propane will drive decreases in expenditures this year for the half of U.S. households heating with those fuels. Higher prices for electricity and heating oil drive increased expenditures for households heating with those fuels in our forecast. More ›
