In 1999, the commercial sector had more than 4.6 million buildings that comprised more than 67 billion square feet of floorspace. The Commercial Buildings Energy Consumption Survey covers 20 years and seven survey cycles and many trends that were previously statistically uncertain have been confirmed.

This report describes the different types of underground storage facilities, defines and clarifies key storage measurement terminology, summarizes categories of storage ownership and operation, and briefly discusses changing patterns of storage utilization. A key element of the report is its discussion of relative measures of gas inventories, which attempts to clarify the notion of ¿percent full¿ as applied to storage facilities.
Monthly Petroleum Time Series Data, by State -- an Update

Four sets of petroleum products time series have been updated: (1) Petroleum Product Prices, (2) Petroleum Product Sales -- Transportation Fuels, (3) Petroleum Product Sales -- Other Fuels, (4) Petroleum Product Stocks. The series start from January 1997 and go through July 2002. The data are extracted from the Oil and Gas Information Resource System (OGIRS).

Financial News for Independent Energy Companies

Reviews recent financial performance of independent U.S. energy companies. Data presented are for April through June 2002. Net income for independent energy companies included in the report as a whole declined 42 percent between the second quarter of 2001 and the second quarter of 2002, due to sharp drops over that period in natural gas prices and the gross refining margin. Producers and refiners sustained the biggest earnings declines, at 57 and 75 percent, respectively. The report includes two tables.

EIA's reactor-level table (updated with data from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission) supports EIA's projection of nuclear generation increasing over the record 2001 level.

Proposed 2003 Natural Gas Surveys

EIA has forwarded a request to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for a three-year extension of authority to use its natural gas data collection forms. The forms included in the clearance request are EIA-176, "Annual Report of Natural and Supplemental Gas Supply and Disposition," EIA-191, "Monthly Underground Natural Gas Storage Report," EIA-857, "Monthly Report of Natural Gas Purchases and Deliveries to Consumers," EIA-895, "Monthly and Annual Quantity of Natural Gas Production Report," EIA-910, "Monthly Natural Gas Marketer Survey," and EIA-912, "Weekly Underground Natural Gas Storage Report." The Form EIA-176 has been extensively revised. Minor revisions to the content, reformatting , and clarifications to the instructions have been applied to the other forms.
