Electric Power Monthly

This report is now available on EIA's Electricity page. The publication has been redesigned to incorporate improved statistics and provide more detailed data. This report now shows tables that are separated into two main categories: Electric Power Sector (Electric Utilities and Independent Power Producers) and Combined Heat and Power Producers (Commercial and Industrial.) All data pertaining to these categories are presented together, thus providing an integrated view of the electric power industry. Additionally, the level of aggregation has been revised. The lowest level of aggregation is at the State level, with greater detail available in other Web products. Also, the publication provides rolling 12-month totals in the national overviews, as appropriate. Appendix D describes the reasoning behind the changes and their effect on electric power publications. View an on-line summary of the publication.

Monthly Natural Gas Time Series Data, by State -- an Update

EIA's Monthly Natural Gas Time Series Data, by State, have been updated. On the EIA States page, click on the desired State on the US Map and then select the desired time series under Natural Gas; Or, from the right column of the EIA States page you can go directly to the EIA Monthly Time Series Data for each State. Two sets of Natural Gas time series have been updated: (1) Prices, (2) Production and Use. The series start from January 1997 and go through January 2003. The data are extracted from the Oil and Gas Information Resource System (OGIRS).

(The April 2003 edition of the Natural Gas Monthly (NGM) presents notable changes in a variety of areas. Substantial changes may be seen in the consumption data series, definitions, and data sources. Additionally, final 2001 data and other revisions to many data series (from 1997-2000 and from 2002 forward,) are presented in this issue. See the NGM Highlights section for further discussion of these changes.)

The Impact of Environmental Compliance Costs on U.S. Refining Profitability, 1995 - 2001

Following the sharp decline in profitability during the 1988 to 1995 period, U.S. petroleum refining and marketing operations experienced an upswing in profitability during the 1996 to 2001 period, along with an increase in capital expenditures. This study focuses on the 1996 to 2001 period (and is a follow-up to the previously-released 1997 report that analyzed the 1988 to 1995 period) and analyzes the sources of increased profitability in U.S. refining/marketing, including the role of the costs of compliance with environmental laws and their implementation. While the primary focus is on the 1996 to 2001 period, the report also presents data for the 1988 to 1995 period.

International Petroleum Monthly - May 2003

Electricity demand in the PJM Interconnection and ISO New England (two regional grid operators covering the Northeast United States) reached multiyear highs on June 23 and June 24, respectively. Electricity demand increased significantly due to a heat wave that affected most of the Eastern United States this week. More
