Quarterly Coal Report - 4th Quarter 2003

This issue provides detailed quarterly data for October -December 2003 and aggregated quarterly historical data for 1997 through the fourth quarter 2003 on the U.S. coal industry. Information includes: U.S. coal production, distribution, exports, imports, receipts, prices, consumption, stocks, and quality; and U.S. coke production, consumption, distribution, imports, and exports. All data for 2002 and prior years are final. Starting with this publication cycle the "Quarterly Coal Report" will only be available in electronic format on the EIA's Coal page. The News includes 2 tables (one of aggregated financial and operating data and one with industry prices and the gross refining margin) and 2 figures (one of petroleum product stocks and one of foreign refining margins). The next update, for January through March 2004, will be released in mid-May 2004.

Coal Producing District Map and Definitions

EIA has posted a map and set of definitions for the Coal Producing Districts as defined in the Bituminous Coal Act of 1937 and Amendments. EIA no longer compiles coal industry data by these Districts, but the map and definitions are supplied because the Districts are still used in some databases and by some in the coal industry.

States Natural Gas Time Series Update

EIA's Monthly Natural Gas Time Series, by State, have been updated. The two sets are: (1) Prices, and (2) Production & Use. The series start from January 1998 and go through November 2003. On the EIA States page, http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/states/_states.html Click on the desired State on the US Map and then select the desired time series under Natural Gas; Or, from the right column of the EIA States page you can go directly to the EIA Monthly Time Series for each State. The data are extracted from the Oil and Gas Information Resource System (OGIRS).

Analysis of Oil and Gas Production in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge

This study analyzed the impact on future oil imports and expenditures of opening the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) to petroleum development. High, low, and mean ANWR oil resource case projections were compared to the Annual Energy Outlook 2004 reference case. The study also examined whether potential synergies exist in opening ANWR to petroleum development and the construction of an Alaska gas pipeline from the North Slope to the lower 48 States.

EIA Requests Comments on Solar Thermal Collector and Photovoltaic Module/Cell Manufacturers Surveys

EIA issued a Federal Register notice soliciting public comments on proposed revisions and a three-year extension of approval to continue collecting Forms EIA-63A, Annual Solar Thermal Collector Manufacturers Survey, and EIA-63B, Annual Photovoltaic Module/Cell Manufacturers Survey. Comments should be filed by May 10, 2004.

Nuclear Generation by Reactor

Nuclear Generation by Reactor confirms that annual nuclear generation has declined in 2003, the first decline since 1997. Monthly generation was lower in each month than in the comparable months of the prior year. The annual total of 763,744 million kilowatt hours represents a two percent decline from the record generation in 2002.

Electric Power Monthly

The latest issue is now available on EIA's Electricity page. The publication was redesigned beginning with the April 2003 issue to incorporate improved statistics and provide more detailed data. This report now shows tables that are separated into two main categories: Electric Power Sector (Electric Utilities and Independent Power Producers) and Combined Heat and Power Producers (Commercial and Industrial.) All data pertaining to these categories are presented together, thus providing an integrated view of the electric power industry. Additionally, the level of aggregation was also revised. The lowest level of aggregation is at the State level, with greater detail available in other Web products. Also, the publication provides rolling 12-month totals in the national overviews, as appropriate. Appendix D describes the reasoning behind the changes and their effect on electric power publications. View an on-line summary of the publication.

On the EIA States page, Click on the desired State on the US Map and then select the desired time series under Petroleum; Or, from the right column of the EIA States page you can go directly to the EIA Monthly Time Series Data for each State. Four sets of petroleum products time series have been updated: (1) Prices, (2) Sales -- Transportation Fuels, (3) Sales -- Other Fuels, and (4) Stocks. The series start from January 1998 and go through December 2003. The data are extracted from the Oil and Gas Information Resource System (OGIRS).
