Canada Country Analysis Brief

Jul 9, 2009
Canada has considerable natural resources and is one of the worlds largest producers and exporters of energy. In 2006, Canada produced 19.3 quadrillion British Thermal Units (Btu) of total energy, the fifth-largest amount in the world. Since 1980, Canadas total energy production has increased by 87 percent, while its total energy consumption has increased by only 44 percent. Almost all of Canadas energy exports go to the United States, making it the largest source of U.S. energy imports. Canada is consistently among the top sources for U.S. oil imports, and it is the largest source of U.S. natural gas and electricity imports. Recognizing the importance of the energy trade between the two countries, both participate in the North American Energy Working Group, which seeks to improve energy integration and cooperation between Canada, the U.S., and Mexico.

OPEC Revenues Fact Sheet

Jul 7, 2009
Based on projections from the EIA July 2009 Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO), members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) could earn $545 billion of net oil export revenues in 2009 and $672 billion in 2010. Last year, OPEC earned $968 billion in net oil export revenues, a 42 percent increase from 2007. Saudi Arabia earned the largest share of these earnings, $285 billion, representing 29 percent of total OPEC revenues. On a per-capita basis, OPEC net oil export earning reached $2,680 in 2008, a 40 percent increase from 2007.

Newly Release of the 2006 MECS Data Tables

Jul 1, 2009
EIA has now released the first eight tables from the 2006 Manufacturing Energy Consumption Survey (MECS). The data show four different types of measures of energy consumption in both physical units and Btu. The new data show an overall decrease in fuel consumption from 2002, although not all industries have decreased. Additional tables such as end use, energy intensities, fuel switching, purchases, expenditures, energy-management, and floor space will be released via this site in the coming weeks. Further, the 2006 MECS has supplemented the previous energy-management and fuel switching data with new items.

Annual Energy Review 2008

Jun 26, 2009
Summarizes U.S. energy history 1949-2008 in tables and figures. Covers all major forms of energy (fossil fuels, nuclear, and renewable energy) and total energy by activity (e.g., production, consumption, trade, stocks, and prices). Also includes financial indicators related to energy; international energy; environmental indicators; and data unit conversions. Key long-term trends are graphically illustrated in special section called Energy Perspectives.

Refinery Capacity Report

Jun 25, 2009
Data series include fuel, electricity, and steam purchased for consumption at the refinery; refinery receipts of crude oil by method of transportation; current and projected capacities for atmospheric crude oil distillation, downstream charge, production, and storage capacities. Respondents are operators of all operating and idle petroleum refineries (including new refineries under construction) and refineries shut down during the previous year, located in the 50 States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Guam, and other U.S. possessions.

Monthly Energy Review

Jun 24, 2009
EIA's primary report of recent energy statistics: total energy production, consumption, and trade; energy prices; overviews of petroleum, natural gas, coal, electricity, nuclear energy, renewable energy, and international petroleum; and data unit conversions. In the first quarter of 2009, total net imports of energy as a share of consumption in the United States stood at 24.8 percent, up slightly from 24.5 percent in the first quarter of 2008 but down noticeably from 27.2 percent in the first quarter of 2007. See What's New in the Monthly Energy Review for a record of changes in this report.

The Shutdown of the Mohave Generating Station

Jun 24, 2009
On December 31, 2005 Nevada's 1,580 megawatt (MW), coal-fired Mohave Generation station ceased commercial operations. What impact did this loss of capacity have on regional electricity markets? What implications does this event have for future efforts to reduce emissions from coal-based electric power? This article attempts to address these issues and more.
