Short-Term Energy Outlook

Dec 9, 2025
Global oil prices. We expect global oil inventories to continue to rise through 2026, putting downward pressure on oil prices in the coming months. We forecast the Brent crude oil price will fall to an average of $55 per barrel (b) in the first quarter of 2026 (1Q26) and remain near that price for the rest of next year. Although we expect crude oil prices to continue to fall in the coming months, we assess that both the OPEC+ production policy and China’s continued inventory builds will limit price declines.

U.S. Oil and Natural Gas Wells by Production Rate

Dec 8, 2025
Our Well Distribution Report presents historical, annual state-level data on well distribution by size and technology and analyzes emerging trends through 2024. Crude oil and natural gas wells drilled horizontally through hydrocarbon-bearing formations are among the most productive wells in the United States. The total number of horizontally drilled wells has increased 98% since 2014. In 2024, 78% of the more than 918,000 U.S. wells produced 15 barrels of oil equivalent per day or less. These wells are mostly older and drilled vertically.

Increasing fuel efficiency leads to decreasing gasoline consumption ›

Annual motor gasoline consumption in the United States decreased in 2025 even as vehicle miles traveled (VMT) increased because of increasing fuel efficiency, a trend we forecast will continue in 2026 and 2027. U.S. motor gasoline consumption averaged 8.9 million barrels per day (b/d) in 2025, 1% less than 2024 and 4% less than pre-pandemic demand in 2019. In our April Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO), we estimate that motor gasoline consumption will continue to decline as forecast fuel efficiency increases and VMT growth slows. More
