EIA's primary report of recent energy statistics: total energy production, consumption, and trade; energy prices; overviews of petroleum, natural gas, coal, electricity, nuclear energy, renewable energy, and international petroleum; and data unit conversions. From January through May of 2007, the industrial sector accounted for 31 percent of all energy consumed in the United States, followed by the transportation sector at 28 percent; the residential sector at 23 percent; and the commercial sector at 18 percent.

Monthly Flash Estimate (MFE)

The August, 2007 issue of the Monthly Flash Estimate (MFE) of Electric Power Data is now available on EIAs Electricity Publications page. MFE provides an early look at the highlights of the upcoming Electric Power Monthly publication and presents tables of electricity generation, fuel consumption for generation, fossil fuel stocks, and average retail sales and prices of electricity. MFE precedes the next issue of EPM by three weeks. The current issue covers an early review of the June, 2007 electricity data. Renewable Energy Consumption and Electricity Preliminary 2006 Statistics

Preliminary report showing renewable energy provided 7 percent of total U.S. energy consumption in 2006. Total renewable energy market consumption was comprised of biomass, hydroelectricity, geothermal, wind and solar.

An Analysis of Price Volatility in Natural Gas Markets

This article presents an analysis of price volatility in the spot natural gas market, with particular emphasis on the Henry Hub in Louisiana. The purpose is to address whether natural gas prices have been more volatile in recent years and identify potential market factors that may contribute to price volatility. In addition to a first-order autoregressive error model, several graphical and statistical tools are used to examine trends and determine influencing factors. Although there is no demonstrated long-term trend in volatility, there are seasonal patterns and volatility is correlated strongly with storage dynamics.

Impact of Higher Natural Gas Prices on Local Distribution Companies and Residential Customers

This report examines some of the problems faced by natural gas consumers as a result of increasing heating bills in recent years and problems associated with larger amounts of uncollectible revenue and lower throughput for the local distribution companies (LDCs) supplying the natural gas. The report also discusses Federal, State, and utility assistance programs for consumers, and focuses on various innovative rate mechanisms used by LDCs, along with the use of physical and financial hedging as a risk-mitigating strategy. Lastly, the report analyzes the risk of LDCs and how the risk has changed since regulatory reform in the utility industry.

Excel spreadsheets with time series data for the years 1980-2005 for carbon dioxide emissions from the consumption of petroleum. Important Notes: (1) The Energy Information Administration reviews its databases each year and important revisions are made to the time series data of individual countries during this review. Therefore, data in the International Energy Annual 2005 may have been substantially revised relative to previous editions. (2) In this edition, we have also moved Cyprus from our Middle East region to our Europe region, changed the name of Serbia and Montenegro to Former Serbia and Montenegro, and added the countries of Montenegro and Serbia to our Europe region.
