Impact of Renewable Fuels Standard/MTBE Provisions of S. 517 Requested by Senators Daschle and Murkowski

Apr 15, 2002
In response to a letter from Senators Daschle and Murkowski dated April 10, 2002, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) is providing additional analysis of the impact of the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS) and methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) ban provisions of S. 517. The Addendum to the service report provides additional analysis of the impact of the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS) and methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) ban provisions of S. 517, requested by Senators Daschle and Murkowski in a letter dated April 10, 2002. The projected consumer cost of the S. 517 provisions is compared with a Reference Case that assumes a 2 percent oxygen requirement is maintained and that already-scheduled MTBE restrictions or bans become effective in 14 States.

Electric Power Monthly

Apr 12, 2002
This report is now available on EIA's Electricity page. The publication provides a monthly overview of the U.S. electric power industry. Topics include new generating units, net generation, consumption of fossil fuels, fossil fuel stocks, and retail sales of electricity. Inventory of Electric Utility Power Plants in the United States 2000

Apr 10, 2002
This report is now available in PDF format on EIA's Electricity page. The 2000 report compiles information regarding electric generating plant capacity. The data files contain existing capacity based on the primary energy source (coal, gas, hydro, nuclear, petroleum, and renewable). A 5-year summary (2001-2005) of proposed changes to existing generating units is contained in aggregate tables. Summary data are vailable by NERC region, Federal region, and Census division. View an on-line summary of the publication.

Petroleum Outlook: Increased Inter-PADD Movements Expected

Apr 9, 2002
This presentation explores the need for more inter-PADD movements of production over the next 5 years. An MTBE ban could increase the need for product movements even more than a the case in which MTBE continues to be used.

About one-fifth of global liquefied natural gas trade flows through the Strait of Hormuz ›

  • In 2024, about 20% of global liquefied natural gas (LNG) trade transited the Strait of Hormuz, primarily from Qatar. The strait is a critical route for oil and petroleum products as well.
  • Qatar exported about 9.3 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) of LNG through the Strait of Hormuz in 2024, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) exported about 0.7 Bcf/d, accounting for nearly all LNG flows from the Persian Gulf through Hormuz.
  • We estimate that 83% of the LNG that moved through the Strait of Hormuz in 2024 went from Persian Gulf countries to Asian markets. China, India, and South Korea were the top destinations for LNG moving through the Strait of Hormuz, accounting for 52% of all Hormuz LNG flows in 2024. In 2024, disruptions to LNG flows through the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, which connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and Arabian Sea, and more U.S. LNG exports to Europe pushed LNG exports from Qatar away from Europe to Asia.
  • Kuwait and the UAE imported LNG that originated outside of the Persian Gulf, including from the United States and West Africa. Bahrain began operating an LNG import terminal in April 2025 and also received cargoes that transited Hormuz from outside of the Persian Gulf, including recent cargoes in April and June that originated from the United States.
