Does EIA publish electricity sales and price data by state and by utility?

Yes, we publish retail electricity sales, which represents the majority of electric utility customers, and average retail electricity prices of electricity by:

  • State
  • Type of provider (utilities or power marketer)
  • Individual provider
  • End-use (consuming) sector

The average retail electricity price we publish includes all costs for delivered electricity, including generation, transmission, distribution, taxes, and fees. We derive these electricity prices by dividing utility revenues from retail electricity sales (in dollars) by their retail electricity (in kilowatthours). The retail electricity prices we publish are not utility rates. Rates are the prices applied to individual or itemized electricity services, such as for the electricity itself, which could be from a supplier different from the distribution utility, and for delivery and other services or charges. Rates are generally based on the type of customer and the amount of electricity they use and, sometimes, when the electricity is used. Rates applied by investor-owned utilities are subject to review and approval by state utility regulatory agencies.

Monthly and annual retail sales and retail price data (preliminary and final) are available in several of our reports and data files:
