January 2020 Import Highlights

Monthly data on the origins of crude oil imports in January 2020 show that one country, Canada, exported more than one million barrels per day to the United States (see table below). The top five exporting countries accounted for 88% of United States crude oil imports in January while the top ten sources accounted for approximately 96% of all U.S. crude oil imports. The top five sources of U.S. crude oil imports for January were Canada (3.9 million b/d), Mexico (720,000 b/d), Saudi Arabia (401,000 b/d), Colombia (314,000 b/d), and Iraq (299,000 b/d). The remaining top ten sources, in order, were Ecuador (231,000 b/d), Russia ( 95,000 b/d), Brazil ( 81,000 b/d), Libya ( 67,000 b/d), and Nigeria ( 62,000 b/d). Total crude oil imports averaged 6.4 million b/d in January, which was a decrease of 422,000 b/d from imports during December 2020.

Canada remained the largest exporter of total petroleum to the United States in January; exporting 4.5 million b/d. The second largest exporter of total petroleum was Mexico with 854,000 b/d.
