In 2023, U.S. total consumption of natural gas was 32.62 trillion cubic feet (Tcf). The five states that consumed the most natural gas in 2023, by amount and percentage share of total U.S. natural gas consumption, were:
- Texas—5.13 Tcf—15.7%
- California—2.09 Tcf—6.4%
- Louisiana—2.00 Tcf—6.1%
- Pennsylvania—1.87 Tcf—5.7%
- Florida—1.64 Tcf—5.0%
In 2023, the United States produced 37.80 Tcf of dry natural gas. The top five largest dry natural gas-producing states in 2023, by amount and percentage share of total U.S. dry gas production, were:
- Texas—9.75 Tcf—25.8%
- Pennsylvania—7.49 Tcf—19.8%
- Louisiana—4.30 Tcf—11.4%
- West Virginia—2.90 Tcf—7.7%
- New Mexico—2.89 Tcf—7.6%
In addition, 0.66 Tcf of dry natural gas was produced in the federal offshore waters of the Gulf of Mexico in 2023, which equaled to 1.7% of total U.S. dry natural gas production.
