According to our December 2025 report, preliminary estimates for September 2025 indicate the transportation sector accounted for 71% of total U.S. petroleum consumption, the industrial sector accounted for 25%, the commercial sector for 2%, the residential sector for 1%, and the electric power sector for less than 1%.

Coal consumption or power generation was up 14.1% compared with the previous year. The average residential retail price of electricity was up 5.2% from October 2024.
