Global oil prices. We expect global oil inventories to rise through 2026, putting significant downward pressure on oil prices in the coming months. We forecast that the Brent crude oil price will fall to an average of $62 per barrel (b) in the fourth quarter of 2025 and $52/b in 2026.

Quarterly Coal Report—Second Quarter 2025

U.S. coal production during the second quarter of 2025 totaled 128.1 million short tons (MMst), which was 3.2% lower than the previous quarter and 8.3% higher than the second quarter of 2024. Second-quarter 2025 U.S. coal exports (22.4 MMst) decreased 8.3% from the first-quarter 2025 level and decreased 14.1% from the second-quarter 2024 level. U.S. coal imports in the second quarter of 2025 totaled 0.7 MMst. All data for 2024 and previous years are final. All data for 2025 are preliminary.

Electric Power Annual 2024

The Electric Power Annual 2024 (EPA2024) report is now available with final data through 2024. The EPA2024 presents 12 years (2013–24) of national-level data on electricity generating capacity, electricity generation, and useful thermal output, fuel receipts, consumption, and emissions.

The EPA2024 indicates:

  • A 3.0% increase in utility-scale electric power generation from 2023 to 2024
  • A 2.6% increase in retail sales from 2023 to 2024
  • A 3.0% increase in the average residential retail price of electricity from 2023 to 2024
  • 50,454 megawatts (MW) of net summer capacity added from new generators in 2024
  • 9,027 MW of net summer capacity dropped due to retirements in 2023
