Frequently Asked Questions

Does EIA publish shale gas and coal bed methane production and reserves data?

Yes.  The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) publishes historical state-level production data and estimates of proved reserves for shale gas and coal bed methane in the U.S. Crude Oil, Natural Gas, and Natural Gas Liquids Proved Reserves report.

There are projections for U.S. shale gas and coal bed methane production in Table 14. Oil and gas supply of the Annual Energy Outlook.

EIA also published two analyses: Technically Recoverable Shale Oil and Shale Gas Resources: An Assessment of 137 Shale Formations in 41 Countries Outside the United States and Review of Emerging Resources: U.S. Shale Gas and Shale Oil Plays.
