Country Analysis Note

  • Taiwan has limited domestic energy resources and must rely on oil and coal imports to satisfy the majority of its energy demand. In 2010, oil and coal made up almost 85% of Taiwan's total primary energy consumption while the remainder was mostly natural gas and smaller amounts of various renewable energy sources.
  • Taiwan consumed 1.1 million barrels per day (bbl/d) of petroleum in 2012. Taiwan has four refineries with a total crude distillation capacity of 1.3 million bbl/d, which mostly run on imported crude oil. It imports most of its crude oil from countries in the Persian Gulf and Angola, according to Global Trade Atlas. Taiwan also imports refined products.
  • Taiwan has small deposits of proved crude oil reserves of approximately 2 million barrels as of January 2013. Taiwan produced an average of 22,000 bbl/d of total oil in 2012, almost all of which is refinery processing gains.
  • Taiwan consumed about 72 million short tons of coal in 2012, all of which was imported. EIA's latest 2011 estimate shows that Taiwan imported almost 74 million short tons of coal, most of which was domestically consumed and a small amount that was exported.
  • Taiwan produces a small amount of natural gas and imports almost all of the natural gas it consumes in the form of liquefied natural gas (LNG). It imported nearly 600 billion cubic feet of LNG in 2012, making it the world's sixth largest LNG importer, according to FACTS Global Energy. Taiwan's largest LNG suppliers are Qatar, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
  • Taiwan is working with China's state-owned China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) to explore for oil and natural gas in the Strait of Taiwan.
  • Taiwan claims sovereignty over the same key areas in the South China Sea as China, including the Spratly Islands, Pratas Island, Paracel Islands, and Scarborough Reef. Oil and natural gas exploration efforts by Taiwan, China, and Vietnam in recent years have increased tensions in the region.
  • Taiwan's electricity net generation grew by nearly 32% from 2000 to 2010, which put a strain on the environment. As a result, Taiwan enacted the Renewable Energy Development Act in 2010, which promotes installation of electric generation capacity that is fueled by renewable energy sources. Taiwan authorities hope to raise electric generation capacity fueled by renewable sources from 8% in 2010 to 16% by 2025.
