Country Analysis Note

  • Natural gas and solid biomass and waste account for the majority of Bangladesh's total primary energy consumption with the remainder being oil, coal, and hydro.
  • Electricity consumption has increased by an annual average of 12 percent from 2000 to 2010, which has strained Bangladesh's electricity grid. Natural gas supply shortages have led to rolling blackouts. About 47 percent of the population has access to electricity, according to the World Bank's 2010 estimates. Those who do not have access to electricity mainly rely on traditional biomass and waste for cooking and heating.
  • Bangladesh is the seventh largest natural gas producer in Asia. The country produced 710 billion cubic feet in 2011, all of which was domestically consumed. Natural gas production in Bangladesh has increased by an annual average of 7 percent over the past decade, from 2002 to 2011.
  • Bangladesh is a net oil importer. In 2012, the country produced almost 6,000 barrels per day (bbl/d) of total oil while consuming nearly 114,000 bbl/d. Because oil consumption is steadily increasing, Bangladesh continues to increase its crude oil and oil product imports to satisfy domestic demand. Bangladesh processes crude oil at its 33,000-bbl/d-refinery. owned by Eastern Refinery Limited (ERL), a subsidiary of Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation.
  • The Bangladesh, Oil, Gas, and Mineral Corporation (Petrobangla) is the key oil and natural gas company in Bangladesh. International Oil Companies (IOCs) must sell natural gas to Petroblanga at a government-determined price and are restricted in their ability to sell natural gas to customers directly, according to PFC Energy.
  • Chevron is the leading IOC in Bangladesh's natural gas sector. Other IOCs, ConocoPhillips and ONGC Videsh Limited, are expected to begin exploring for hydrocarbon resources in three shallow-water blocks in the Bay of Bengal.
  • Bangladesh is attempting to attract investment by IOCs through favorable financial incentives, particularly by enacting price reforms for IOCs. Bangladesh hopes to increase natural gas production to limit strains on its power grid and reduce blackouts. PFC Energy estimates that Bangladesh must increase it natural gas supply by 35 percent to eliminate natural gas supply shortages.
