New data tool combines easily updatable energy and economic data in Microsoft Excel spreadsheets
The EIA data add-in for Microsoft Excel for Windows builds on the well-known Federal Reserve Economic Data (FRED) add-in from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. It allows users to update their saved spreadsheets to include the most recent data with a single click and can be found at:
http://www.eia.gov/beta/api/excel/
The add-in creates an EIA tab in Excel, allowing researchers to find and download directly into a spreadsheet:
- energy time series data from EIA
- economic data series from the St. Louis Federal Reserve
"This ability to save worksheets and then update the data with a single click to rerun the analysis weeks or months later using the most recent data is an immense saving of time and effort for anyone performing periodic analyses of energy and economic data," said EIA Administrator Adam Sieminski.
The add-in enables users to browse categories or search on keywords to find and download the series information and data. Once they have fetched the data, all of Excel’s functionality is available to create analyses and graphics.
The EIA and the St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank add-ins are powered by application programming interfaces (APIs), which, along with the add-ins, are offered free of charge as part of each organization’s commitment to open data.
