The Annual Coal Report (ACR) provides annual data on U.S. coal production, number of mines, productive capacity, recoverable reserves, employment, productivity, consumption, stocks, and prices. All data for 2024 and previous years are final.
Highlights for 2024
- U.S. coal production decreased 11.3% year over year to 512.5 million short tons (MMst). The number of producing coal mines decreased from 560 to 524 mines.
- The total productive capacity of U.S. coal mines was 832.8 MMst, a decrease of 1.7% from 2023.
- The average number of employees at U.S. coal mines decreased by 1,416 from 2023 to 44,060 employees.
- U.S. coal mining productivity, as measured by average production per employee hour, decreased 7.6% from 2023 to 5.22 short tons per employee hour.
- U.S. coal consumption decreased 3.5% from 425.9 MMst in 2023 to 410.9 MMst. The electric power sector accounted for 373.3 MMst (87.6%) of the total U.S. coal consumed in 2024.
- The average sales price of bituminous coal was $86.72 per short ton, a 9.9% decrease from 2023. The average sales price of subbituminous coal was $18.06 per short ton, a 2.8% increase from 2023. The average sales price of thermal coal increased by 0.7% from 2023 to $37.85 per short ton. The average sales price of metallurgical coal decreased 15.5% from 2022 to $180.02 per short ton.
- Total U.S. coal stocks in 2024 ended the year at 156.2 MMst, 4.1% lower than at the same time in 2023. Electric power coal stocks decreased by 5.2 MMst to 128.3 MMst at the end of 2024.
