Country Analysis Note

  • Poland is the second largest coal producer in Europe, behind Germany. Poland produces very small quantities of crude oil and natural gas and it is a net oil and natural gas importer. The country contains shale resources, but resource estimates have recently been revised downward following unsatisfactory exploration results.
  • In 2012, Poland's total primary energy consumption was 3.9 quadrillion Btu. Coal constituted 55% of consumption, with the remainder represented by oil (26%), natural gas (15%), and renewable energy sources (4%), according to the BP 2013 Statistical Review.
  • Poland produced 158 million short tons of coal in 2012, which typically accounts for around 20% of total coal production in Europe. Poland consumes almost all of the coal it produces, while exporting a small amount. The country's electricity sector is heavily reliant on coal, as coal-fired power plants represented more than 75% of installed capacity in 2010, according to IHS Cera.
  • According to a 2013 EIA study, Poland contained 148 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of technically recoverable shale gas resources, down from the 187 Tcf estimated in 2011. Shale gas operations have slowed since 2011, as ExxonMobil ceased exploration and Marathon announced that it would discontinue operations after unsatisfactory test-drilling results.
  • Poland imports crude oil primarily from Russia through the Druzhba pipeline, which has a capacity of 1 million barrels per day (bbl/d). The country has two large refineries, with a total crude distillation capacity of 493,000 bbl/d.
  • Poland imports natural gas primarily from Russia, Norway, and Germany. In addition to transporting oil to Western Europe through Poland, Russia transports its natural gas to Poland through the Yamal pipeline, with a capacity of 974 billion cubic feet (Bcf) according to IHS Cera.
  • A liquefied natural gas (LNG) import plant with a capacity of nearly 177 Bcf per year is expected to come online in late 2014. The Polish Oil and Gas Company (PGNiG) has signed a contract to import some of the plant's LNG from Qatar.
  • Poland's government has announced the goal of sourcing 15.5% of domestic energy supply from renewable energy sources. However, the strength of the coal industry, the local abundance of coal, and relative price of coal has contributed to Poland's opposition to environmental measures proposed by the European Union.
