NOTE: The files for 2008 and beyond include utility and nonutility fuel receipts data from Schedule 2 of the new Form EIA-923. In this new form EIA started collecting additional data elements such as Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Number and Mine Name for coal plants only. New columns that were added in the 2008 through 2010 files are - Fuel Group, Coalmine MSHA ID, Coalmine Name, Total Cost, Regulatory Status, Operator ID, Operator Name and respondent Frequency (Monthly- M or Annual-A). The cost column contains the total delivered cost of the fuel for utility plants only. Nonutility plants will have a blank because those data are protected.
Please note that starting 2010 Schedule 2 data is also available at a new location where all EIA 923 data are posted in a single file. Click on the link given below to access the EIA 923 data file.

Monthly Fuel Receipts and Fuel Quality Data
The following files for 2002 through 2007 contain data on monthly deliveries of fossil fuels to nonutility generating facilities. These data were collected on the Form EIA-423 which came into existence in January 2002. Included are the specific energy source, quantity of fuel delivered, the Btu content, sulfur content, ash content, coal mine state and county (or country) of origin, coal mine type (surface/underground), as well as the supplier of the fuel. Fuel cost data collected on this survey will not be made available to the public because it is protected.
The files beginning in 2008 contain data on monthly deliveries of fossil fuels to both utility and nonutility generating facilities. These data are collected on Schedule 2 of the new Form EIA-923. (Prior to 2008, utility fuel receipts data were collected on the FERC Form 423. See /cneaf/electricity/page/ferc423.html.)
The data files include plants with a fossil-fueled nameplate generating capacity of 50 or more megawatts. If a plant in the frame of the survey does not appear in a particular month, either they have reported “no activity” or they are a non-respondent and we are in the process of obtaining their data. Please contact the survey manager (see below) if you believe a plant has been omitted from the data.
All data are available in excel format, and in a compressed zip file (e423yyyy.zip)*. This zip file expands into a excel file (f423yyyy.xls)* that contains the monthly data. Click on the link given at the right hand corner to access a data layout file that gives the file description and record layout for the data base structure available in pdf version.
*Note: Substitute the applicable year for "yyyy" in the file name.
