Average Distance Shipped per Ton by Transportation Mode, 1979-1997

Average Distance Shipped per Ton by Transportation Mode, 1979-1997. This line-graph shows the average distance shipped per ton of utility contract coal by each transportation mode (Rail, Barge, Truck, Multimode, and Other). For Rail shipments, the average distance increased from 485 miles in 1979 to about 794 miles in 1997. Barge shipment distance increased only by one half mile, from 306.5 miles in 1979 to 307 miles in 1997. Trucked coal distances decreased from 38 miles in 1979 to 32 miles in 1997. Multimode distances increased from 707 miles in 1979 to 1,088 miles in 1997. Distances by other modes increased form 50 miles in 1979 to 90 miles in 1997. Overall average distance by all modes increased from 436 miles in 1979 to 714 miles in 1997.

  

 Notes: Multimode includes shipments that use any combination of rail, truck, barge, and collier transportation. Other includes shipments for which transportation mode is unknown, as well as conveyor, tramway, and slurry pipeline.
