The Quarterly Coal Report provides detailed quarterly data on U.S. coal production, exports, imports, receipts, prices, consumption, quality, and stocks. The report also provides data on U.S. coke production, consumption, stocks, imports, and exports. All data for 2023 and previous years are final. All data for 2024 are preliminary.
Highlights for the fourth quarter of 2024
- U.S. coal production during the fourth quarter of 2024 totaled 128 million short tons (MMst), which was 6% lower than the previous quarter and 9.1% lower than the fourth quarter of 2023. Production in the Western region, which represented about 55% of total U.S. coal production in the fourth quarter of 2024, totaled about 70.4 MMst (10.8% lower than the fourth quarter of 2023).
- U.S. coal exports for the fourth quarter of 2024 (27.7 MMst) increased 1.4% from the third quarter of 2024. The average price of U.S. coal exports during the fourth quarter of 2024 was $118.09 per short ton.
- The United States continued to import coal primarily from Colombia (49.3%) and Canada (45%). No imports from Australia or Indonesia were recorded for the fourth quarter of 2024. U.S. coal imports in the fourth quarter of 2024 totaled 0.4 MMst. The average price of U.S. coal imports during the fourth quarter of 2024 was $174.87 per short ton.
- Steam coal exports totaled 12.4 MMst (10.2% lower than the third quarter of 2024). Metallurgical coal exports totaled 15.3 MMst (13.3% higher than the third quarter of 2024).
- U.S. coal consumption totaled 99.3 MMst in the fourth quarter of 2024, which was 17.8% lower than the 120.8 MMst reported in the third quarter of 2024 and 1.4% lower than the 100.7 MMst reported in the fourth quarter of 2023. The electric power sector accounted for about 90% of the total U.S. coal consumption in the fourth quarter of 2024.
- In the fourth quarter of 2024, coal stocks grew to 149 MMst from 144 MMst at the end of the third quarter of 2024 (a 3.5% increase). Stocks in the electric power sector increased to 127.9 MMst from 122.7 MMst at the end of the third quarter of 2024, the first increase since the end of the first quarter of 2024.
